Extractions: He lies heavily against the pillows, eyes squeezed shut. The hair above his left temple is growing back. The surgeons didn't remove the thick, dark braid that he has been growing for the past several years, and it rests against his shoulder. His right hand moves restlessly across an imagined keyboard. Perhaps he plays Liszt's `Mephisto Waltz' or maybe it's a Mozart sonata or something from Chopin or Beethoven. It could be one of his own compositions, some jazz or even his own arrangement of `La Traviata'. His left hand is a tight fist. The silent music rises through the ether, reminding heaven that he is here, a prisoner longing to escape. Some might say that Alexei Sultanov is a magician who bewitches his audiences and sends them soaring into the uncharted territory of celestial rapture or diving into the muddy watercolor realm of melancholy. Some critics say he is a rebel whose musical interpretations are too unorthodox, too crass and too immature to be considered great.

He will play Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in b minor, a work he has performed in concert since his early youth not that long ago. Mr. Sultanov, born in Uzbekistan, first garnered the attention of the music world for winning the 1989 Van Cliburn International Competition at age 19. Since then he has toured extensively, appearing across Europe and with American symphonies in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Milwaukee, Atlanta and many other cities. He recorded the Tchaikovsky concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra for the Teldec label. He has said in interviews that he ``can't remember a time he didn't know'' the Tchaikovsky concerto, and that it is one of his favorite pieces as well as that of the audience. The Augusta Symphony concert will also include Dances of Galanta by Zoltan Kodaly and Afro-American Symphony by Still, in honor of Black History Month.

Extractions: FORT WORTH - Thirteen years ago, at only 19, Alexei Sultanov stood on a musical mountaintop, receiving applause nightly that bordered on pandemonium as he progressed to the gold medal of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Today, after seven years of serious health problems, Sultanov, 32, lies in a hospital bed in Fort Worth, enduring chronic pain and violent spasms after his insurance company denied coverage for what doctors called a standard treatment. The treatment, which his doctors say would largely control Sultanov's spasms and allow him to at least partially recover and to live independently, involves implanting a $10,000 pump in his abdomen to supply a steady, controlled flow of the drug baclofen, a muscle relaxant. "It is inhumane," Dr. Edward Kramer, Sultanov's neurologist, said about Golden Rule Insurance Co.'s decision to deny coverage. "We all ought to think about this. When something like this can happen to a concert pianist, it can happen to any of us."

Extractions: Never mind the rain. Forget the chill. Fort Worth's party set wouldn't let a bit of cold, damp weather stand in the way of honoring Chissa Gordon, one of this city's most respected doyennes. Albany's party people were there, too, as Chissa's children, Dr. William Gordon of Dallas and Margarite Gordon of Santa Fe, N.M., hosted a luncheon celebrating their mother's most recent accomplishment. The occasion was the grand opening of the W.K. Gordon Center for Industrial History of Texas at Thurber. Once, this tiny outpost an hour west of Fort Worth had been the largest coal-mining town in Texas. Now it's home to a handful of people and a couple of home-cooking eateries. If others had forgotten Thurber's glory days, Chissa had not, and she became the driving force behind the $3.2 million museum project named in honor of her late father-in-law. The museum is a joint venture of the Texas Department of Transportation, Erath County, Tarleton State University and its foundation and Chissa. Her additional $2 million gift will support the maintenance and operation of the center as well as the teaching and research of Dr. T. Lindsay Baker
