Extractions: Amazon UK Amazon USA Here we have a double album of some superb playing of Bach on the piano, rather than a harpsichord, or worse still, one of those reconstructed instruments which sound neither one thing nor the other. Grigory Sokolov, having recorded for Opus 111 for some time, here delights the ear with some very sensitive piano playing. There is moreover, enough variation of tempo and articulation to make this work seem much shorter than it really is - this is the sign of a master pianist. The Partita No. 2 is played in the same way, and I enjoyed this disc very much. The only quirk I was able to discern in his playing was a tendency to spread some chords very widely, which I thought was a slight mannerism. This is particularly evident with the opening of the Partita, which whilst other soloists do the same thing, the extent is much less. This did not mar my enjoyment of this issue. Is there anything to complain about? Well, yes. The recording, made in Russia in 1982, was an early digital recording, and the piano sound is a little metallic with a "digital glare" on it. This is not particularly serious, but competition is severe, and when you compare this issue with those available from Hyperion (Tatiana Nikolaieva) and Philips (Zoltan Kocsis), the difference is clearly audible.

Lanaudière Haut Lieu De Culture Musical "dossier Presse" THE GAZETTE, THURSDAY, JULY,25, 1996 RUSSIAN pianist grigory sokolov OFFERS BIGTECHNIQUE BUT LITTLE RANGE OF EXPRESSION Arthur Kaptainis Joliette Known in http://collections.ic.gc.ca/lanaudiere/dossier/96/gazjuly96.htm
Extractions: Joliette - Known in Montreal for its weekend blowouts at the Amphitheatre, the festival International de Lanaudière also presents weekday recitals and chamber concerts at small churches, some rural and quaint, some distinctly suburban. Grigory Sokolov, a 46 year old Russian pianist who still lives in St. Petersburg, returned on Tuesday night to one of the latter places of worship, the Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Prairies, on the outskirts of Joliette. A former teenage Tchaikovsky Competition winner, Sokolov is recognizably Russian by virtue of his huge technique, preference for rich colors and willingness to stretch a phrase to make a point. He began the recital with six Chopin Nocturnes, playing them so slowly and freely that the impression (particularly in a darkened hall) was almost of a continuous improvisation. Expressive ? Perhaps, but expression should have range, not just persistence. Chopin wrote these as individual pieces, and they were entiled to treatment as such. It is worth recalling tthat Sokolov did precisely the same thing last year to Schubert's six Moments Musicaux Op. 94. After the break the pianist shifted into heroic mode, playing Rachmaninoff's piano-bench favorite, the Prelude Op. 3 No. 2 in C Sharp Minor, followed by the preludes Op. 23 Nos 2 (B Flat Major), 3 (D Major) and 5 (G Minor).

Beethoven's greatest compositions were often born into the world much like pearls from an oyster-with a little sand and considerable irritation. One particular irritant was publisher Antonio Diabelli, whose "botched piece of cobbling," as Beethoven called the waltz in "Danube peasant" style that Diabelli sent in 1819, aroused Beethoven's ire to extremes. But the pearl brought forth from this intense annoyance four years later was one of extraordinary price-a piece that, perhaps more than Bach's Goldberg Variations, could be called an Everest of piano writing as well as a towering summation of its composer's keyboard style.
