Extractions: GRIGORY SOKOLOV Piano biography Since his introduction to the UK at the Edinburgh Festival in 1990 (Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 3, Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra/Lazarev) Grigory Sokolov has made an astonishing impact on British audiences; his subsequent performances here have included the Philharmonia, Royal Scottish National, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Hallé and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras. He has twice performed at the Proms (Rachmaninov Concerto No 3 in 1995, Tchaikovsky Concerto No 1 in 1997), and has given recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Edinburgh Festival, Aldeburgh (Snape Maltings), Cheltenham Festival, Birmingham, Dublin (National Concert Hall), and St John's Smith Square as part of the BBC's lunchtime series. Even by the age of five Grigory Sokolov had attracted the attention of the Russian music world through his extraordinary and precocious talent. Born in Leningrad, he was educated at a specialist music school and entered the Leningrad Conservatory in 1960. He made his first important public appearance at the age of 12, and in 1966, aged 16, he gained international recognition by winning first prize at the third International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition : a unanimous decision from a jury headed by Emil Gilels. His success was followed by tours with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra to Italy, Portugal and Germany which led to further appearances throughout Europe, North America and the Far East.

Extractions: Grigory Sokolov is a remarkable musician. His sheer force of personality and the integrity of his interpretations go hand-in-hand with playing of tremendous ardour to leave one breathless with admiration. The programme reflected Sokolovs wide repertoire. He plays with the lights firmly down so that attention is focussed purely on the musical expression: no reading of the programme notes while the concert is in progress here. This certainly served to lend an intimacy to his Haydn. The long first half was taken up by three sonatas by this composer: F, HobXVI:23; D, HobXVI:27; E minor, HobXVI:34. It was an arrangement that worked well, the restrained F major working its way to the grander, almost Romantic E minor via the quirky (and sometimes quasi-orchestral) D major. Sokolov was able to bring the audience in to Haydns world immediately. If one was in awe at his superbly even touch in the first sonata, it was wit that was to the fore in the second. The presto first movement of the E minor was determined in approach. Throughout these Sonatas, Sokolov did not let the momentum of concentration slip for a moment, an impression enhanced by his tendency to hunch over the keyboard; in fact, the only threat to this concentration came from that scourge of modern society, the unmuted mobile telephone.
