Extractions: Reviews "Dan Franklin Smith is one of the most brilliant pianists I have ever had the pleasure of hearing and reviewing!" Eskilstuna-Kuriren, SWEDEN "We were indeed fortunate to have had an artist of the stature of Dan Franklin Smith to perform here. Smith gave Chopin's popular Ballade in G Minor, Op. 23, new meaning as he experimented with phrasing, nuance, rubato and tempi. The entire composition was breathtakingly beautiful as the haunting and romantic melodies soared under the guidance of Dan Smith's authoritative control . . . . The dazzling, agile fingerwork left the hearers in utter awe of [Smith's] advanced technical skill and beauty of tone . . . . His quiet, sincere, straightforward manner relies on an economy of movement and energy which allows him introspection into the core of the music." The Yuma Evening Sun Dan Franklin Smith "is returning to Tucson at the request of audience members who have enjoyed his previous appearances." Tucson Weekly "Chopin's well-loved G Minor Ballade [was delivered] with a wonderful sense of its romantic poetry . . . . In Prokofiev's stunningly played Sonata No. 9 the pianist displayed faultless passagework."

Since the series' inception, nearly seventy pianists have graced its roster, and many have been so warmly received that Dayton audiences have requested their return on three or four separate occasions. The has provided the Midwestern debut for many of these artists, and a large number have gone on to achieve recognition throughout the world. To date, the series has offered a podium to pianists such as Frank Braley, Steven DeGroote, Janina Fialkowska, Kemal Gekic , Caio Pagano, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Sergei Schepkin, Juana Zayas, and many others of international distinction. In addition, the has offered the area premieres for contemporary works by composers such as Boulez, Birtwistle, Carter, Messiaen, Prokofieff, Rzewski, Sessions, Shostakovitch, and Stravinsky. The guiding philosophy of the has been to celebrate the artistry of the piano by presenting performers of rare distinction, many of whom have traveled uniquely individualistic paths of accomplishment. Happily, that philosophy has been warmly embraced over the years by its audience, which has proven to be one of the most knowledgable and appreciative in America.

Extractions: D.C. Classical Buyer (Washington) Kurt Atterberg Piano Concerto and Violin Concerto Here are two concertos which prove there are still musical treasures to be discovered and recorded. If you like Brahms, Rachmaninov and Addinsell, you'll love this piano concerto. The performance is absolutely superb, and represents the recording debut of a truly exceptional new pianist you'll be hearing more from him for sure. The violin concerto is a Nordic beauty that should please the most jaded of listeners. Again, the performance is superb, as is the recorded sound. A must for all lovers of later Romantic/early modern music. Bob McQuinton CD Review from: Records International September 1999 Kurt Atterberg (1887-1974). Piano Concerto in B Flat Minor, Op. 37, Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op.7. The piano concerto is a full-throated, dizzyingly romantic work from 1927-35 whose first movement sounds now like a Swedish Rachmaninov and now like the score to an echt-Hollywood romance of the 1930's. The piano is treated as an equal of the orchestra-more a symphony with piano obbligato than a true concerto. The second movement is a deeply elegiac andante , full of nature lyricism, magic and melancholy in which the piano has a more soloistic role and the finale, marked
Extractions: ARTHUR HINTONS PIANO CONCERTO, Lambeth Orchestra, Christopher Fifield, March 2002 (LF) At St Lukes, West Norwood on Saturday 23 March 2002, the Lambeth Orchestra and their conductor Christopher Fifield were joined by the American pianist Dan Franklin Smith for the revival of the four movement Piano Concerto in D minor by Arthur Hinton (1869-1941), which ran for around 31 minutes. Hintons birth and death dates give us the clue: he is the exact contemporary of Walford Davies, and although one encounters his name from time to time in connection with the musical scene at the beginning of the twentieth century, other than some piano miniatures played literally decades ago by Frank Laffitte, I cannot remember having heard anything by him before, though he has long been on my list of names to explore. The Piano Quintet, Violin Sonata and a programmatic piano suite A Summer Pilgrimage in the White Mountains (all published) look comparatively inexpensive and rewarding ways to explore further.

Extractions: End Notes On Feb. 7-9, the "International Conference on Gandhian Alternative to War and Terrorism" was held at Gandhi Bhavan, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, India. Peace researchers and activists gathered from around the globe to examine this era of "new war" that has followed the terrorist attacks in the United States, and to search for a means to build a world of peace and nonviolence. SGI President Ikeda sent a message to the conference that was read before the full assembly. Indian president Kocheril Raman Narayanan, vice president Krishna Kant, and former Indian president R. Venkataraman also sent messages in support of the event. The conference was sponsored by the International Center of Gandhian Studies and Research (Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti), in association with the G. Ramachandran Institute of Nonviolence and other organizations. In his message, President Ikeda introduced words of optimism and hope from Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. President Ikeda noted that these two champions of nonviolence always maintained an optimistic attitude because of their abiding faith in the limitless capacity of the power of the human spirit. Also, President Ikeda observed that the violent nature inherent in contemporary civilization stems from structural and cultural violence. The key to opening the door to a century of peace and nonviolence, he asserted, lies in the example of Gandhi's nonviolent struggle.
