Extractions: Washington Post April 15, 1982; Page D1 Dimitris Sgouros, a 12-year-old Greek piano prodigy, will make a surprise American debut tonight at New York's Carnegie Hall with the National Symphony Orchestra. NSO music director Mstislav Rostropovich dropped two pieces from the orchestra's Tchaikovsky festival to make room for Sgouros to play the lengthy and difficult Rachmaninoff Third Concerto. "Romeo and Juliet" and the Coronation March were omitted from tonight's program. "It will still be a Tchaikovsky festival but on this occasion there will have to be a Rachmaninoff interruption," Rostropovich explained. Rostropovich is the first to present Sgouros in America after hearing him play recently in Europe, where the prodigy made his professional debut less than a year ago on a cruise ship.

Extractions: Some figures turn into symbols of friendship and goodwill between neighbors. Since the example of friendship displayed by Atatürk and Venizelos, between Turkey and Greece, there have emerged various symbolic figures reputable in different fields. Once, Ýsmet Ýnönü became famous in Greece as a popular political figure. Dido Sotiriou, a famous Greek author, is one of the unforgettable figures, owing to her novel, "Farewell Anatolia." Greek movie star Aliki Vuyuklaki broke records in Turkey in the 1970s, while Filiz Akýn became famous in Greece at around the same time. The Maria Farandouri-Zülfü Livaneli-Mikis Theodorakis trio is only yet another one of the many examples. In fact, the SCAMV had long been planning to arrange events that would bring together classical music performers of Turkey and Greece. Baþman, with this intention in mind, had invited the Athens Symphony Orchestra to the closing program of the music festival, to perform the works of Turkish and Greek composers. However, the plan was overrun by the policies of the Greek government of the time, and the program was cancelled solely on political grounds. Ironically, the work that the Athens Symphony Orchestra was to perform at that concert was a composition by famous composer Nezeritis, the uncle of Dimitris Nezeritis, the Greek Ambassador in Ankara of the time. The SCAMV made a goodwill gesture by later including the performance of this work by the Presidential Symphony Orchestra in the festival program.
