Curtis Symphony Orchestra March 411, 1999. review. Curtis Symphony Orchestra. Robert Spano, conductor;peter serkin, piano; Sunday, Feb. 28, Academy of Music, pianist peter serkin. http://citypaper.net/articles/030499/mus.review1.shtml
Extractions: This invigorating program featuring Mozart, Barber, Stravinsky and Strauss was an ample demonstration that Mozart is the mother's milk for all who followed him. When Beethoven heard the 24th Piano Concerto, which was played by Peter Serkin on this evening, he was said to have despaired of ever writing music so eloquent and finely wrought. In Stravinsky's late Movements for Piano and Orchestra, the composer sounds tentative in his use of serialism, a style he employed only after the death of Arnold Schoenberg, his great ideological rival in the world of modern music. It is the Mozartean manipulation of woodwind sounds that cements this tentative dance with the serial method. Even amid the tumult and bombast of Strauss, in this case, "Also Sprach Zarathustra," there is a sense of color and timbral balance that the 20th-century German composer openly attributes to his adoration of Mozart. These were glorious performances by this astonishingly talented band of teenagers. Guest conductor Robert Spano, Curtis Class of 1985, produced exceptionally lucid and buoyant musicmaking. He consistently demanded, and received, alert and brightly voiced playing. Peter Serkin, Curtis Class of 1964, was the soloist in the Stravinsky and Mozart works. In the Stravinsky, Serkin deferred to the overall scope of the music, sounding like a member of a chamber group rather than a soloist. But in the Mozart, the piano became a protagonist in an opera, playing against the broad canvas of the orchestra with great emotional and dramatic subtlety. Serkin has known this music for most of his life, and yet, he still performs with the score before him as a reference, and in his playing, still seeks to explore the fine hues of this magnificent score.

Extractions: A European tour, four world premieres and a performance and recording cycle of Beethoven symphonies highlight the Minnesota Orchestra's 2003-04 calendar. Osmo Vanska, beginning his reign as the orchestra's 10th music director, will lead the symphony to Austria, Germany, England, Scotland and his native Finland next February. Acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell is the guest soloist throughout the 13-day tour. Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg will help send the orchestra off in grand style by performing with the symphony Feb. 11 at Carnegie Hall. "Even if people in Orchestra Hall are hearing great playing, they want to know how we compare to other orchestras," Vanska says. "If we want to be well-known, we can't only do it from Minneapolis. If we're getting good reviews and good feedback outside Minnesota, it's some kind of guarantee for the quality. People back home can be more proud of the orchestra and, hopefully, we can win new friends to the orchestra." Along with Bell, who appears here the week before going on tour with the orchestra, other prominent guest soloists next season are cellist Steven Isserlis (Oct. 9-11), pianist Peter Serkin (Nov. 26 and 28), Salerno-Sonnenberg (Jan. 22-24, 2004) and percussionist Evelyn Glennie (April 15-17, 2004).

The Stella Freeman Weis Cultural Endowment is bringing renowned pianist Claude Frank and his daughter, Pamela Frank, one of today's most brilliant young violinists, to the campus of Susquehanna University on Monday, March 27, at 8 p.m. The concert, which will be held in Weber Chapel Auditorium, will be presented free of charge as a gift to the community. Last month, a Miami Herald review described the father-daughter team as "perfect partners" who play with "infectious spirit" and drama. The New York Times recently noted that "their unanimity of purpose made for the lively interplay that is chamber music at its best." Leading one of the most distinguished careers of any pianist, Claude Frank has repeatedly appeared with the world's foremost orchestras, at major festivals and at its most prestigious universities since his debut with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in 1959. He is an internationally acclaimed interpreter of the piano literature of Beethoven, and has recorded a CD featuring 32 of the composer's sonatas.

Indeed, the artist as a young man debuted at Marlboro College in 1959 when he was 12. Serkin returns frequently to the site of his introduction to the classical music world, and this year he brings his Bach scores with him. While the evening's set has not yet been announced, Serkin has recently recorded Bach's Goldberg Variations, a set of 32 short pieces originally composed as exercises that have become the benchmark works for any pianist seeking to measure her interpretation of Bach against this century's great performers. These three acts are part of the "Young, Gifted and Atoning" second anniversary of the Million Man March.
