Extractions: Dabringhaus und Grimm’s series of Cage piano music is an outstanding addition to the catalogue, and this disc of music for voice merely reiterates the hypnotic beauty and seemingly endless invention of this composer’s music. The excellent vocalist (voice ranges do not mean much in reference to this music) is Anna Clementi, the daughter of composer Aldo Clementi (who incidentally was an acquaintance of Cage). Whereas Cage’s piano music takes up a multiplicity of discs, the works for voice and piano can be accommodated on one. And a fascinating disc it is, too. Here is a record that invites (or even necessitates) repeated listening for the pieces to slowly yield their secrets to the listener. Four Walls , which takes up just under an hour of the total playing time, was written for a choreography for Merce Cunningham. It was premiered in August 1944, but seems to have been pretty much neglected since. Satie-influenced in its emphasis on repetition of certain chords and sequences, it limits itself to the white keys of the piano, voice and piano are not even heard together: the vocal contribution is limited to a solo ‘Interlude’ of under three minutes’ duration to a text by Cunningham (texts are unfortunately not included), so the emphasis is laid most definitely at Schleiermacher’s door. As always, this pianist plays with the utmost sensitivity. He is clearly steeped in this music and it is from this that his ability to communicate stems. Much of
Extractions: Crotchet A glance at Steffen Schleiermacher's discography to date reveals that he lives and breathes the music of our century. His successful series of the piano music of John Cage is a landmark event (also on Dabringhaus und Grimm), and other composers recorded include Feldman, Cowell and Earle Brown. Being a composer himself, he is has the added benefit of having insights into the creative process itself. All of this means that he has a belief in and a comprehension of this music that makes for riveting listening. On the present disc, he inaugurates a series which centres on one of the most exciting compositional meeting places of the twentieth century: the Darmstadt Summer Courses, a veritable melting pot of ideas from the high priests of the avant-garde. Of all the composers in attendance, the figures of Boulez and Stockhausen possibly loom the largest: but the disc opens with a piece by one of the founders of modern music, Olivier Messiaen. His includes many characteristic features, including birdsong, the use of modes of limited transposition and non-retrogradable rhythms. Schleiermacher's incredible clarity, his decision never to shirk away from violence and his intellectual grasp of the structure of this piece is beyond reproach, the musical layering leading inevitably to the climax. Within the space of 13 minutes, Schleiermacher has journeyed a long way from his playfully phrased opening gestures.

Extractions: Akira Nishimura Carillons of Ekstasis (1987) The experience of arriving at a concert hall, finding our seats, listening to a concert, and applauding at its conclusion has become so ingrained in our behavior that we often forget to critically examine these actions. However, in his work Masse und Macht, Elias Canetti questions this tradition. He concludes that there are few phenomena so bizarre in our cultural life as the modern concert audience. Indeed, 'while the music that is performed lives mostly from its rhythm, no rhythmic movement from the listener may be perceived...people sit motionless there, as if they were able to hear nothing.' Canetti further observes that people that allow music to naturally work itself upon them act much differently. And those hearing it for the first time might react in ecstatic excitement:

Help John Cage's final position in the fragmented history of music in the second half of the 20th century is as yet undecided. I suspect it will take a far longer historical perspective than we can manage before his place can be fixed. Was he a pivotal figure in changing attitudes towards music (and art in general) in a postmodernist world? Or was he simply a footnote eccentric in a stylistic evolution that had a much more robust mainstream than we realise? So far, at least, there is no sign that Cage's reputation is suffering the dip that conventionally follows a composer's death; there seem to be more discs of his works emerging now, 10 years after his demise, than ever before. The indefatigable German pianist Steffan Schleiermacher has reached volume nine of his complete survey of Cage's piano music and, with the Etudes Australes, tackles one of the least known and most massive of the later works.
