There are notable selections from, amongst others, Alfred Brendel, Emanuel Ax, Leif Ove Andsnes, Andras Schiff and, in another ongoing complete cycle, Jen¶ Jand³. This present selection was recorded over a decade ago by a pianist new to me, and very enjoyable it is. With a sparkling, secure technique, and a real feeling for the dynamic contrasts within each piece, this is a recital to compare with the best. Bavouzet is a young pianist (b.1962) who comes with a ringing endorsement, in the booklet, from none other than Zoltan Kocsis. His playing shares some of the HungarianÂs traits: crystal clear accuracy, an extremely wide dynamic range, and an impetuosity that gives an added frisson, without becoming self-indulgent. He is helped, I feel, by his choice of instrument. Bavouzet uses a Yamaha CF III concert grand, pianos which are noted generally for a bright, ringing tone, and an action which is regulated to be on the light side. In this respect it resembles the B¶sendorfers often favoured by Andras Schiff, who maintains that the lightness of touch and brightness of tone offer a modern counterpart to the Viennese pianos of HaydnÂs day.

Subsequently he continued his musical studies at the Ferenc Liszt Academy with Professor Pal Kadosa, Gyorgy Kurtag and Ferenc Rados, and in London with George Malcolm. Recitals and special cycles, ie the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann and Bartok form an important part of his activities. From 2004 he will be performing complete cycles of the 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas in chronological order. In 1999 he created his own chamber orchestra, the Cappella Andrea Barca, to perform over a period of 7 years at the Salzburg Mozartwoche all the Piano Concertos written by Mozart. With this Orchestra, and with a few other orchestras with whom he has developed a close relationship over the years, he will also direct other piano concertos and conduct some symphonies by Viennese classical composers. For the Bach celebration year in 2000 he gave many Bach recitals and conducted Bach's St Matthew Passion and other compositions.

BBCM - Page Title under the direction of Bernard Haitink. andras schiff, the pianistin the first two pieces, was absolutely riveting throughout. http://www.bbcm.co.uk/concerts/13-6-1999.htm
Extractions: On Sunday 13 June a group of us from the BBCM went to hear the LSO at the Barbican Concert Hall play Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 18 in B flat and two pieces by Strauss - the Burleske in D minor and Also Sprach Zarathustra - all under the direction of Bernard Haitink. Andras Schiff, the pianist in the first two pieces, was absolutely riveting throughout. The Mozart was the more reflective of the two piano pieces, and more subtle. It wasn't as showy as its Strauss counterpart, and was more intimate, requiring greater concentration from the audience. The final movement was fairly exuberant and stormy, allegro vivace, with a triumphant solo by the fantastic Andras Schiff, which in some ways was going to prepare us for the Strauss. The Strauss pieces were less demanding and I found myself reclining into my seat. In the Burleske, the first of the two Strauss pieces, a full timpani section was brought on, together with some more brass. It opens with a theme on timpani to which the orchestra replies, and then gives way to a lovely piano solo. A relaxed waltz leads up to the piece's explosions and fiery recapitulation of its long coda. As for Also sprach Zarathustra, the long introduction was that used by Kubrick in his film 2001: A Space Odyssey. It begins with a dramatic and stark trumpet fanfare, with the timpani beating out a consistent rhythm in the background, and then varies between the major and minor tones. Then the strings enter on a more joyous note and we're introduced to the organ, a rather small one considering the size of the stage. Eventually the piece moves towards a more tranquil ending. It was quite remarkable to see Haitink conduct such a full orchestra with such ease.

Extractions: Died July 28, 1750, Leipzig In November 1741 Bach, then 56 years old, made the hundred-mile trip east from Leipzig to Dresden to visit an old friend, Count Hermann Keyserlingk, the Russian ambassador to the Saxon court. Keyserlingk's court harpsichordist was the fourteen-year-old Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who at age ten had been a student of Bach. There are several stories as to what happened next, all impossible to confirm. One is that Keyserlingk commissioned a work for his young harpsichordist and gave Bach a goblet full of gold coins in payment. Another is that Keyserlingk was an insomniac who specified that he wanted a piece that Goldberg could play to him as he went to sleep. What is certain is that the following year Bach published (as the fourth part of his edition of keyboard works, the Clavier-Übung ) a work he called simply Aria with Thirty Variations , composed for two-manual harpsichord. The score bore no dedication, nor any mention at all of Keyserlingk or Goldberg. But Bach did give the count a copy of this music, and the conclusion is that this is the piece that had been requested in Dresden. By a process of (perhaps random) association, one of the greatest works ever written immortalizes a fourteen-year-old harpsichord player, and we know this music today simply as the

Extractions: Among the leading pianists, few can be depended on to perform the canonic repertory with such satisfying integrity, season after season, as Andras Schiff. So it was that a large Piano Series audience (mixed with a few coughing boors) turned out for the Hungarian pianist's concert Sunday at Symphony Center, eager to share his insights into areas of the Romantic literature not normally associated with him. Schiff rewarded them with one of the season's more important recitals. Beethoven's explicit marking in the manuscript of his C-sharp-minor sonata is for the entire piece to be played "very delicately and with pedal." Schiff took the composer at his word, keeping the sustaining pedal down throughout the serene opening movement. This enabled him to use the accumulating haze of sound to expressive advantage, but the wonder of it was how lucid everything in this "Moonlight" sounded. The same immaculate clarity informed the companion E-flat Major sonata. Schiff allowed it to breathe an air of calm rapture, refining tone color and dynamics with the utmost subtlety. Other pianists have projected the finale on a more heroic scale, but his approach made for a persuasive alternative view.
