RUSSIA MAKES IT FUNNY 200109-05 141700 Mind your mobile phones and hold your cough pianist may runaway after 3d ring (0) Famous Hungarian pianist andras schiff refused to play http://funreports.com/2001/09/05/14269.html
Extractions: Famous Hungarian pianist Andras Schiff refused to play to the rings of mobile phones, peeps of watches, and cough and sneezes of the audience as he was performing at the Edinburgh Art Festival. Mr. Schiff was trying to play Mozarts Fantasy in h-minor but could not concentrate when mobile phones started ringing in the hall. He walked off the stage after the 3d ring, having recommended the audience to properly clear their throats during the break. Some critics, who were present at the concert, admit that the audience turned out especially noisy there. Children normally behave much more quietly.
Extractions: Among the leading pianists, few can be depended on to perform the canonic repertory with such satisfying integrity, season after season, as Andras Schiff. So it was that a large Piano Series audience (mixed with a few coughing boors) turned out for the Hungarian pianist's concert Sunday at Symphony Center, eager to share his insights into areas of the Romantic literature not normally associated with him. Schiff rewarded them with one of the season's more important recitals. Beethoven's explicit marking in the manuscript of his C-sharp-minor sonata is for the entire piece to be played "very delicately and with pedal." Schiff took the composer at his word, keeping the sustaining pedal down throughout the serene opening movement. This enabled him to use the accumulating haze of sound to expressive advantage, but the wonder of it was how lucid everything in this "Moonlight" sounded. The same immaculate clarity informed the companion E-flat Major sonata. Schiff allowed it to breathe an air of calm rapture, refining tone color and dynamics with the utmost subtlety. Other pianists have projected the finale on a more heroic scale, but his approach made for a persuasive alternative view.
New Statesman and the increasing number of performers like him the pianist Till Fellner and GlennGould's asceticism have led to at their extremes, andras schiff remains a http://www.newstatesman.co.uk/199908090028.htm
Extractions: Andras Schiff got up the nose of Le Monde during the 1997 Salzburg Festival. First it was sartorial. "His dress is old-fashioned, the revers of his lapels are in black velvet, a watch chain completes the ensemble." Then personal. The Hungarian "poses as a personage, a great master of the piano". And finally it was musical. "The left hand disappears in a halo of pedal, the tempo shifts, the right hand sounds too loudly . . . "
Extractions: This was a popular event at which I found myself out of sympathy. The RFH was almost full and the audience generally appeared content, respectful, appreciative and attentive - a few people left early during the first half, having probably found themselves in the wrong concert! Andras Schiff , who is properly renowned for his Bach playing, rebuked some coughers in a school-masterly fashion during one of the fugues. I have no prejudine against Bach on the piano, indeed I prefer it to harpsichord for this music. In his programme notes he castigates militant 'authenticists' who seek to ban Bach on the piano; are there really any such? But are these intimate pieces really appropriate for a huge concert hall, however satisfactory for the promoters financially? That is the nub of the problem, which Schiff does not address in his lengthy and thoughtful essay, which traverses many of the issues. The other question is whether this is good programme planning? 24 preludes and 24 fugues can be a lot to take straight off. Schiff's playing was expressive, but sounded quiet and a little remote at a distance. He was sparing in use of pedal, as he advocates but, despite his writing to the contrary, his approach seemed to be based mainly on

Extractions: Johann Sebastian Bach's Capriccio in B-flat Majo r is commonly (though not conclusively) considered to have been written in connection with his slightly older brother Johann Jacob's entry as an oboist into the service of King Charles XII of Sweden in 1704. (Johann Jacob was to serve in military campaigns that took him as far as Constantinople; he became flautist at the Swedish court in 1713). The nineteen-year-old composer provided descriptive titles in a combination of Italian and German for the six movements of the work, along the lines of Kuhnau's Biblical Sonata s of 1700. (Bach had become organist at Arnstadt in 1703; two decades later he succeeded Kuhnau at Leipzig.) The progress of the work is as follows: 1) blandishments of his friends not to undertake the journey; 2) portrayal of various dangers that might befall him in distant lands; 3) general lament of his friends; 4) his friends, seeing they cannot stop him, bid him farewell; 5) the song of the post-horn; 6) fugue imitating the sound of the post-horn. Most striking musically are the strange modulations in no. 2, the sighing variations over the chaconne bass in no. 3, and the octave leap of the post-horn which figures in both nos. 5 and 6. The fugue is typical of the capriccio genre at this time. Delight in the uncharacteristic programmatic character of this work makes it one of the best known of Bach's early years.
