Extractions: One of paintings of Arthur Rubinstein that went up for auction These are not the only mementos of the artist, numerous others can be found at the Poznañski Palace in £ód¼ which houses the Rubinstein Museum. The pianist was born in £ód¼, and began his music career by taking piano lessons there at the age of three. The objects put up for auction, including music scores, pictures, furniture and trinkets, were bought by Rubinstein and his wife Nela or were presented to them by prominent politicians and artists over a period of 50 years. Rubinstein was acclaimed as the best performer of Chopin's compositions. A citizen of the world, Rubinstein spent his long and interesting life in Poland, New York City, the Spanish Marbella and Paris. The objects sold at the Parisian auction come from a Parisian house which Rubinstein bought in 1938. The house was in the vicinity of Claude Debussy's residence. In the 1960s, Rubinstein's neighbors were Prince Rainier of Monaco and Princess Grace, whose portrait hung in Rubinstein's living room. The room also had a chandelier hand-picked by the princess, which unfortunately was not auctioned. Rubinstein's life became a legend while he was still in his youth. Twenty years after his death, a large crowd of collectors were attracted to the auction house in the Palais des Congrøs in Paris. Unlike Rubinstein, not everyone has had the opportunity to talk to and to have a keepsake photograph taken with Albert Einstein-the unique picture, valued at 200 euro, was sold for 1,800 euro. Original scores by Beethoven and Brahms were the collection's highlight.

Extractions: Site Map Search About Us Home ... Audio engineering Bustard interview Garrett interview Letterman interview Dyer interview Practice and study ... By Clarke Bustard, Richmond Times-Dispatch staff writer bit of name-dropping to separate the connoisseurs of piano playing from the groupies: Vladimir Horowitz . Too easy. Horowitz is to the piano as Hershey is to chocolate. Arthur Rubinstein . Trick question. The groupie would figure the H in Arthur is a misprint, rather than a letter that impresario Sol Hurok dropped to give the pianist extra box-office cachet. (Rubinstein restored the H and told the tale in his autobiography.) Ivan Moravec . Now we're talking. It takes a piano connoisseur not to say, "Who?" Not much about the chunky, balding appearance and mild, courtly manner of Moravec send signals that say "star." His kind of star power is heard rather than seen. With the passing of the early 20th-century generation of keyboard giants - Horowitz, Rubinstein, Rudolf Serkin, Claudio Arrau, Mieczyslaw Horszowski, Rudolf Firkusny - the 64-year-old Moravec gradually has become a leading inheritor of their late-romantic/early modern legacy. The Czech pianist, who will perform Tuesday at Virginia Commonwealth University, is sometimes dubbed in critical shorthand a pianistic "poet." That means he is more concerned with quality of tone than with quantity, dexterity or showmanship, and that he favors composers, such as Chopin and Debussy, with similar priorities.

Extractions: After studying with Anton Rubinstein's pupil Carl Siecke, Friedheim became Rubinstein's piano pupil when he was fourteen years old. They were fruitful studies; Friedheim deeply admired Rubinstein and was awed by his piano playing when the master was in form. However, by the age of sixteen, Rubinstein's wayward temperament had become confusing to Friedheim. "His advice and criticism had begun to vary from day to day. He would say that I was going to be a successful pianist, then he could advise me to give all my time to composition. I decided to take all the advice he offered, and more, to become pianist, composer and conductor as well." Friedheim decided to continue his education in The Faculty of Philosophy at St. Petersburg University. "Here I was in my element. I liked philosophy. Intense application was easy for me; yet I was gregarious and articulate and, because I was a good athlete, as well as a pupil of Rubinstein, and a pianist in my own right, I was popular." He told the conservative Rubinstein that he wanted to go to Weimar to work with Liszt. In those years, Liszt's radical music left Rubinstein cold and angry. When someone asked Rubinstein where Friedheim had gone, he growled, "He went to Weimar - and to the devil." Friedheim hardly felt so. "I learned much from Rubinstein during the four years I was his pupil, but I was to learn far more from Franz Liszt, whose daring virtuosity had sounded the depths of music, both past and present, and who was now reaching out into the unknown... When I stood with exalted spirits in the presence of that august and legendary figure, Franz Liszt, my greatest hour had struck."

Extractions: in Calgary Coming Soon! Check News! Krzysztof Jablonski - Reviews A PIANIST MAKES DEBUT (...) In an all-Chopin program Mr. Jablonski played elegantly and with unshakeable interpretative control (...) his fastidiousness was a virtue, and left one admiring the transparency of his textures and his ability to build interpretations that had a clear, logical shape. His renderings of four Mazurkas (Op. 24) danced gracefully; and he played both the Scherzo No. 1 (Op. 20) and the Barcarolle (Op. 60) with a tempestuous, dramatic touch. Mr. Jablonski was at his most poetic in the 24 Preludes (Op. 28). He moved easily through the set's shifting moods - from lyrical to blustery to regal - and as in the works on the first half of the program, the clarity of sound never faltered. Particularly striking was his way of letting the melodic lines shine out over the accompanimental figuration without sacrificing the nuances within the rippling accompaniments.
