Extractions: Crotchet The great Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter gave this all-Beethoven recital in London and at the Aldburgh in June 1975; it is the latter performance from Blythburgh Church which is recorded here. A great occasion it was too. I was there at the Royal Festival Hall and the occasion remains vividly in my memory, now brought to life again by this splendidly atmospheric recording. A critic wrote of the recital, 'Beethoven remains the ultimate challenge for the pianist', and it is true that in the 'Hammerklavier' Sonata especially, Richter communicates the feeling of rising to meet a supreme challenge. The concentration of the playing in the slow movement is nothing less than extraordinary, but it is the majestic grandeur with which the fugal finale is delivered which is most special of all. Given the scale and sheer size of this late Sonata, Richter wisely prefaced it with shorter pieces, though they are not without substance themselves. The early Sonata in C, opus 2 no. 3, is a highly individual work, and Richter clearly believed its forward-looking qualities would lead towards the world of the later masterpiece. He was very fond of playing single-composer recitals, and perhaps this was why. In between come the opus 126 Bagatelles, under-estimated by those who do not really know them, these form Beethoven's final statement as a composer of piano music, surprisingly wide ranging in their imageries and forward-looking in their style.

Sviatoslav Richter was upset over a poster that advertised him as "the greatest pianist in the world," claiming that "I cannot live up to such a legend, I'm just a normal human being who plays the piano." Tell that to the pianists who regularly pack his concerts . Revered as he is, the eighty year old pianist goes out of his way to avoid the limelight. He shuns large halls and big cities, and prefers instead to roam the back roads of Europe and Russia, with piano in tow, like a musical Johnny Appleseed. Along the way he gives recitals in village churches, monastery libraries, or tiny baroque theaters. Richter's Bach has become more humane and involved over the years. One does not go to this pianist expecting the last word in Baroque style and ornamentation, yet the sarabandes of the English and French suites are mesmerizing in their breathless calm, and so is the fugue of the early D minor Toccata. Equally impressive is the grand design and emotional breadth brought to the Overture in the French Style Listeners have the opportunity to compare Richter's unbridled, pianistically oriented 1959-60 Beethoven performances of the Op. 10, #3, Op. 26, and Op. 57 sonatas (Praga) to his more stylish and patiently detailed interpretations of recent years. Standing out are the radiant and eloquent last three sonatas, a "Funeral March" sonata (Op. 26) that puts all other Richter versions in the shade, and a magnificent "Archduke" trio. But why was the long repeat in the latter's Scherzo, present on a video filmed at this performance, edited out here?
Extractions: trovar.com Alfred Schnittke on Richter For people of my generation Svyatoslav Richter looms as a lofty peak where live music merges with its history. No matter how often you tell yourself that he is our contemporary, that you can see and hear him - you fail to realize it, because for decades he has been occupying a place of honour along such men as Chopin, Paganini, Liszt, Rachmaninov and Chaliapin, constituting a living link between the present time and eternity. For nearly half a century this man - outwardly self-contained and seemingly inaccessible - has been the centre of Moscow's musical life as performer, sponsor of festivals, the first to notice and assist talented young musicians and artists, the connoisseur of literature, the theatre and the cinema, the collector of paintings, the familiar figure at art exhibitions and himself a painter and a stage director. When he conceives the idea of holding a cycle of concerts on a particular subject, an art festival or an informal recital, his fiery temperament surmounts all and every obstacle in his way. His self-criticism is proverbial: after a wonderful appearance arousing the enthusiastic acclaim of public and press, and inspiring scholarly investigations, he would torture himself for a minute slip which he alone has noticed. There is nothing strange in this attitude, nor does it mean a desire to show off - Richter approaches musical performance with a standard all his own, for he alone knows the original concept and he alone can therefore estimate the degree to which it has been realized. We do not know what perfection haunts his inner ear and can consequently form no conception of what might be the ideal performance as he sees it. We can but feel grateful for the part of his idea that he has succeeded in carrying over, since it exceeds by far anything that we are able to imagine.

After the intermission, he played works of Schubert, Chopin, and Liszt. What makes these performances unusual is the physical condition of the audience: Sofia was plagued by a flu epidemic, and the coughing during the performance of Pictures is well nigh unbearable. As the work progresses, one senses Richter driving himself inward. The more they cough, it would seem, the more demonic and unsettling the performance.
