Extractions: BMG/Melodiya 29460-2 th , Glazunov, and Rimsky-Korsakoff concertos, as well as Franck's curious potboiler Les Dijins and Beethoven Choral Fantasy sung in Russian. BMG has remastered these and other early Richter recordingssome which have been out of circulation for yearsfor ten disc anthology. Some familiar favorites are here: the translucent Schumann Humoresque and Franck Prelude, Chorale and Fugue , a high-voltage Rachmaninoff 1 st Concerto, two headstrong and archetonic Schubert sonata performances (D Major, Op. 53 and A Minor, Op. 42), and a searching, large-scaled Beethoven Pathetique , Long time Richterians will rejoice in a miraculous 1952 live Scriabin recital, featuring a molten, over the top 6 th Pictures at an Exhibition , lacks the animal magnetism of Richter's better known Sofia concert version from 1958. Issued for the first time, I believe, are the passionately played Miaskovsky Third Sonata (no date specified) and three Schumann Novelettes from 1960 (#1, 2 and 8)more flexible and sonically superior to the briefly available Carnegie Hall versions recorded the following month. John L. Grant said: This recording changed my conception of what is possible on the piano with Bach, and changed my view of Bach. Although the recording is not well engineered, the playing is breathtaking, astonishing, incomparable. Richter's interpretation of the Well-Tempered is equalled, here and there in small degrees by other pianists, but as a whole, no other recorded interepretation comes even close to Richter's mastery of the instrument and the music. Bertram Cruikshank said: The echoing sound of this recording is further exacerbated by the fact that it was not well-engineered and it was most likely recorded in a room with poor acoustics. Also, the piano which he plays has an irritating "twanging" sound to it. Victor Gane said: The work itself conbined with the interpretation makes it to be among my Bach's favorites. It is definitively a very intimate music that requires consentration and analysis. Unfortunatelly the quality of the recording is not the best, fact that can really obset any lover of Richter's playing (i.e. you can barely hear the basses). This is a must buy for anybody who appreciates both Bach and Richter.

Extractions: trovar.com Heinrich Neuhaus on Richter Our country is rich in excellent pianists: Vladimir Sofronitsky, Emil Gilels, Lev Oborin, Yakov Zak, Maria Grinberg, Maria Yudina, and in the younger generation: Dmitri Bashkirov, Yevgeny Malinin and others. There are too many to name and all of them are different. To me the question: "Who's best?" which usually intrigues the general public and is precisely why people throng to all kinds of competitions, seems an idle one. Who's "best" - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven or Brahms? Pushkin, Dante, Goethe or Shakespeare? Raphael, Velazquez, El Greco or Titian? Frankly, I don't know. In the world of physical reality we can positively state that Elbrus is the highest peak in the Caucasus and Mont Blanc the highest in the Alps. These things can be measured. Take the races: horse No. 1 beats horse No. 2 by a quarter of a head. This is an actual happening and can be measured (although I could never understand why this "quarter of a head" should rouse the spectators to such a pitch of excitement). But how can we measure accurately the qualitative differences of phenomena in the spiritual world, how can we determine their "height" as we determine the height of Elbrus or Gauri Sankar? For art is perceived not only intellectually ("measurably") but also emotionally, or in other words "non-rationally". The emotional approach to art is not a debatable subject because of the famous maxim that "tastes differ". (Personally, I think it's most debatable since tastes can be good or bad.)

Extractions: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920-1995) was, paradoxically, one of the most celebrated and one of the most reclusive pianists of his time. His fabled technique and peerless musicianship earned him attention early on as the undisputed winner of the 1939 Geneva International Music Competition. One of the jury members was Alfred Cortot, who announced "A new Liszt is born!". To the frustration of his public, Michelangelis studio recordings were few and his concert appearances sporadic: his brief recital for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (taped in the Toronto studios, 1970) was appropriately titled "A Most Rare Event". It features a sterling performance of Beethovens Piano Sonata No. 3 in C Major, Op. 2, No. 3.

Extractions: he piano was by far Prokofiev's favorite instrument. He was a formidable pianist in his own right, premiering most of his works in concert halls around the world. Fortunately, many of the greatest pianists of the 20th century were drawn to Prokofiev's compositions as well. Two Russian pianists who knew Prokofiev and premiered his later piano sonatas stand tallest in the pantheon of great interpreters of Prokofiev's piano works Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter. As with the great conductors of today who specialize in Prokofiev's works, there are a number of young pianists who rival the greats of yesterday. Several pianists have recently completed recording the entire Prokofiev piano cycle including Boris Berman (on Chandos), Frederic Chiu (on Harmonia Mundi), and Oleg Marshev (on Danacord). Also not to be missed is Barbara Nissman , who was the first to record the complete piano sonatas to commemorate Prokoifev's 100th birthday in 1991 her sonata cycle remains one of the towering achievements of the last twenty years for Prokofiev lovers. Extractions: Biography Sviatoslav Richter was born in Zhitomir in the Ukraine on 20 March, 1915. His father was of German origin, and was a respected pianist and piano teacher. His Russian mother was an amateur musician who was one of the early admirers of Debussy and Scriabin. He had his first music lessons with his father, becoming a master of the keyboard at the age of 8. The family later moved to Odessa where the young Sviatoslav enrolled at the Odessa Conservatory. As a teenager, he was attracted to a career in conducting. At 15 he became a repetiteur for the Odessa Opera and the Ballet Theater, and at 18, chief assistant conductor. He gave his first piano recital at the age of 19, also in Odessa. At the age of 22 he went to study in Moscow with one of Russia's most foremost piano teachers, Heinrich Neuhaus. He was Neuhaus' star student, who later wrote of him: "I must say in all honesty that there was nothing more I could teach Richter" . Despite that he was expelled three times from the conservatory for refusing to study all the compulsory subjects including "political education". However, each time he was reinstated.

The series will continue into the year 2000. The Ukrainian pianist Sviatoslav Richter (1915 - 1997) was an extremely camera-shy artist. Only a few films document his enormous talent and the fascination of his piano playing. His wife, however, was conscious of the importance of concert recordings for posterity and had the Schubert recital in Aldeburgh recorded with hidden cameras. Later, in the train, as the Richters had already left England, she confessed everything to her husband. Richter accepted her decision and admitted that he had not even noticed the cameras. - Arthur Intelmann for Classica

Extractions: Died: 1 August 1997, Moscow Ukrainian pianist Sviatoslav Richter was soon dubbed "notoriously unreliable" - cancelling concerts almost every year (often at he last moment) or changing his whole programme. But there were always inner constraints or health reasons, and ultimately it has not harmed his reputation as one of the world's finest pianists. As a boy, Richter had only sporadic piano lessons, yet a natural, insatiable curiosity about everything to do with music helped him on his way until he began as a repetiteur at the Odessa Opera when he was eighteen. This period endowed him with a knowledge of opera unusual in a pianist and taught him how to make the piano "sing". The same year he began rehearsing the piano literature in earnest, gibing his first public recital - still self-taught - the following year. At twenty-two he entered the Moscow Conservatory, as a pupil of Heinrich Neuhaus, and under the latter's intelligent direction he matured into a professional, without losing his originality.

Extractions: Updated: German MOSCOW Sviatoslav Richter, who rose to fame in the Soviet Union in the 1940s to become one of the 20th century's leading pianists, died of a heart attack Friday in a Moscow hospital, the Russian Culture Ministry said. He was 82. Renowned for improvisatory genius, Richter could sell out any concert hall in the world, even at age 80. Although the music world had many pianists who were technically brilliant, Richter was one of the few who excelled both technically and artistically. His was a wide repertoire that included practically all styles, from Bach to Debussy, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. When Richter played a series of concerts at the Los Angeles County Music Center and the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in 1965, Times music editor Albert Goldberg said audiences were treated to "true Richter magic." "Pianistically the quality was unvarying," the critic wrote. "He is one of the masters of the instrument."
