I am constantly troubled by the misgiving that, in venturing into too many fields, I may have failed to make the best use of my life." Rachmaninoff was born at the estate of Oneg, near Novgorod. Sergei was born into a wealthy family, but by the time Rachmaninoff turned nine his family had to move out of the estate and were left with nothing because of his father's wastefulness. He began to study piano with his mother at the age of four. He continued his studies with the great pianists Zvereff and Arenski. While still a student, he composed. In 1905 and 1906, he conducted at the Imperial Grand Theatre of Moscow. He conducted the Philharmonic concerts in Moscow from 1911 to 1913. During World War I, he played at many charity concerts. Extractions: The great russian composer By Nina Yajontova April 1st marked 125 years since the birth of the great Russian composer, pianist and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff. "I write the music which I hear playing inside me, he wrote. "I am a Russian composer, therefore my temperament, outlook and music are quintessentially Russian..." With the appearance of his more mature compositions in the early 1900s, Rachmaninoff built himself a strong following among Russia's cultural elite. His individuality was shaped at the time of a growing political and cultural upsurge in Russia, a time which spawned such artistic giants as the great opera singer Fyodor Chaliapine who was a very close friend of Rachmaninoff's. They first met each other at Savva Mamontov's Private Opera in Moscow and the two men continued their friendship working together at the Bolshoi Theater where Rachmaninoff had been invited to work as a conductor. Sergei Rachmaninoff's genius was immediately visible no matter what he did, but his talen shined the brightest as a pianist playing a number of sold-out concerts both in Russia and abroad. In one of the many books about Rachmaninoff, we read about the famed pianist Artur Rubinstein being asked to name his choice for the best pianist around. "Horowitz, he said, "Yes, Horowitz is the best..." "And what about Rachmaninoff?" As if remembering something, Rubinstein said: "No, you're talking about pianists, but Rachmaninoff is something absolutely different" and, raising his hands into the air, he looked up...

Extractions: March 20th marked 85 years since the prominent contemporary pianist Svyatoslav Richter was born. More details come from Professor Andrei Zolotov, an art expert and National Prize winner who for more than 40 years remained Richter's friend and associate. Richter symbolized the divine, the artistic, something, which we cannot touch but only feel and without which life is incomplete. These are hidden layers that exist along with the real ones in which people go to concerts or perform on stage. And these are striking manifestations of the artistic nature of life itself. Richter, I think, is a unique phenomenon that can be perceived only within the context of art. Though he was an idealist by nature, Richter lived a really difficult life that bore the tragedies of the time and the country he lived in. He had a Russian mother and a German father who in his time had studied in the Vienna Conservatory. Richter said his teacher in the Moscow Conservatory Henrich Neuhaus reminded him of his father. Richter never hurt anyone and he never said anything bad about anyone. He was conscious of his authority but never used it. Moreover, he never gave anyone the right to use it.

While it seldom transpires that one gains equal distinction as a composer, and a pianist, yet this may be said of Rachmaninoff. In the course of the next hundred years or so the excellence of his piano playing will no doubt have become mythical, but the message of his musical compositions for the orchestra, for the voice and for the piano will still remain as cherished treasures of mankind. One fine morning not long ago, I found myself, by appointment, in the spacious studio of Rachmaninoff overlooking the Hudson. In this quiet and contemplative room where the master did much of his composing, we talked of many things. In the course of our conversation I asked the master musician from Moscow how he first gained recognition as a composer, for this is one of the most difficult things a young composer has to contend with. Extractions: S ergei Rachmaninoff, great Russian pianist and composer, was born in Oneg, district of Novgorod on April 1, 1873. His grandfather and father were both amateur pianists. His musical talents were discovered early and his parents took him to St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1882 and studied until 1885 under Demiansky. He then went to the Moscow Conservatory to study with Nikolai Zverev (where Skryabin was a fellow pupil) , and his cousin Ziloti for piano and Taneyev and Arensky for composition. While in Moscow, he chanced to meet Tchaikovsky, who showed interst in his talent. Tchaikovsky was to have conducted his work, the symphonic fantasy The Rock, but he died before being able todo so (Rachmaninoff responded by writing an Elegiac Trio in his memory). About this time , he also wrote his famous Prelude in C-sharp minor at the age of 19. Rachmaninoff graduated as pianist in 1891, with honors, and as composer in 1892, receiving the Great Gold Medal for his examination composition - the opera Aleko, based on a poem by Pushkin. During the ensuing years he composed piano pieces , songs and orchestral works, but the disastrous premiere in 1897 of his Symphony No,1, poorly conducted by Glazunov (it is said that Glazunov was drunk when he conducted this Symphony) , brought about a creative despair that wasn't dispelled until he sought medical help in 1900. He turned to a hypnotist, Dr Nikolai Dahl, who swung his watch in front of the composer and convinced him that his next piece would be world-famous. He went away and wrote this, dedicating it to the good doctor. Then he quickly composed his Second Piano Concerto. It was an immediate success with audiences, becoming the most popular concerto written this century.

Extractions: Sergei Rachmaninoff was one of the finest pianists who ever lived. He was helped, no doubt by his pair of huge hands. He was born in Oneg (near Novgorod) on April 1, 1873 and he died in Beverly Hills on March 28, 1943. Until the death of his friend Scriabin, Rachmaninoff had only played his own music in recitals. After Scriabin died in 1915, Rachmaninoff played his friend's music at a series of recitals, but in a completely different style from Scriabin. Many were outraged, but a young Prokofiev came backstage and told Rachmaninoff that he played very well. Rachmaninoff asked: "And you thought I'd play badly?" After that Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev didn't speak for years. Rachmaninoff was an early wunderkind - he entered the Moscow conservatory when he was 14. He won medals for his piano playing, and he was very serious about composition early in his life. During preparations for performance of the students' final projects, the professor in charge freely cut and altered the students' compositions, but Rachaminoff not only refused to make any changes, he even had the nerve to point out the errors in the professor's conducting. In 1892 he wrote the famous Prelude in C-sharp minor. There is a story that the reason this prelude became so popular is because Rachmaninoff forgot to copywright it, so all the publishers had a field day with it. His first symphony, on the other hand, was very badly received. Afterwards he could not write any music for three years. He was treated by a hypnotic specialist, Dr. Nikolai Dahl, who repeated over and over: "You will write your concerto... You will write your concerto... You will work with great facility... The concerto will be of excellent quality." Rachmaninoff did write a concerto, finishing it in 1901, and it became his most popular work. In the years before World War I Rachmaninoff wrote many excellent songs, including Vocalise, and extremely challenging piano piece, "tailored to his own spectacular hands."

Extractions: Sergei Rachmaninoff Sergei Vasil'yevich Rachmaninoff had a rough chilhood. His father was a drunk and gambler, wasting his wife's estate and then abandoning the family. With this foundation of instability and being unasved, Rachmoninoff had a hard time adjusting to life as a young man. His extrodinary talent as a pianist is what brought him fame that no doubt would not have existed otherwise. After various failures and successes in his training years, Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote his First Symphony in 1895. It was met with severe criticism which brought on "the composer's worst crisis of psychic distress and lethargy..." (1). He thus entered a time when he could neither write nor play music. He was then persuaded to visit a certain Dr. Nikolai Dahl, specialized in hypnosis. In 1900, from January to April, Rachmaninoff daily "visited the doctor's somberly velvet-draped chambers. From the quiet, Dahl would repeat over and over: 'You will begin to write...you will work with great facility...the music you write will be good music.' "(1) What this produced was Rachmaninoff's famous Second Piano Concerto . Rachmaninoff said later, "Although it sounds incredible, this cure really helped me. I began to write..new musical ideas began to stir within me - far more than I needed for my concerto."(1)
