Extractions: Vareses , played by a fragment of the London Symphony Orchestra, was given in a performance that was both athletic and precise. Although Boulez conducting was tight but expansive the subtlest of hand gestures sufficed to elicit a perfect response from the players; the effect was to draw out the tension between the silence and the sound in an electrifying way. It is hard to imagine this radical work being given a more definitive performance, with conductor and orchestra completely in unison in realising this intimate but intense composition.
Extractions: Some concerts often prove elusive to write about. This was one of them. Pollini's mastery of the keyboard is so complete one wonders exactly why he can't fill this concerto with the melancholic mellowness, the summer-like darkness it needs in truly great performances of it. There was sublime understatement in the third movement's cello-piano exchange, but coming so soon after the second movement's tussles between orchestra and pianist it didn't seem quite sublime enough. At times, during both the first and second movements, he had to lift himself from his stool to achieve the correct dynamic range, at others he was almost inaudible. It was a perplexing performance, but not a great one. accelerando , viz Toscanini, just the sublime opening expansively played as Brahms intended it to be. Conductor and orchestra found an expressiveness that had been lacking in the concerto, and an electricity that it is so rare to hear in any performance of a Brahms symphony now-a-days, let alone one as ubiquitous in the concert hall as the First. If this performance reminded me of any recording of the work it would be Guido Cantelli's studio recording with the same orchestra. This was a fiery, passionate, lyrical performance. It lacked nothing. Marc Bridle is part of Music on the Web(UK) Webmaster: Len Mullenger Len@musicweb.uk.net

Yundi Li - Chopin Deutsche Grammophon - 1 CD 471.479-2

Extractions: Robert Schumann's impassioned "Symphony No. 2." Composed by a troubled Schumann as he recovered from his first deep depression, the "Symphony No. 2" particularly in the adagio third movement includes some of the most moving pages he ever penned. Next, internationally acclaimed keyboard virtuoso Maurizio Pollini takes the stage for a performance of Johannes Brahms ' "Piano Concerto No. 2." Inspired by Brahms ' visits to the splendors of Italy, the rich work is permeated with an age-old German nostalgia and affection for its southern neighbor.
Extractions: The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall. There was a time in the United States that one spoke of "The Big Three" when discussing American orchestras. The reference was to the country's oldest symphonic ensembles the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. For a very long time they constituted a very exclusive club. It was not until after the Second World War that two other American orchestras earned a place at this exalted level, and the talk switched from "The Big Three" to "The Big Five." The two that were elevated were the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and The Cleveland Orchestra. They had always been good orchestras and even respected orchestras but not great orchestras. The tide turned when each was put in the care of master conductors Fritz Reiner in Chicago and George Szell in Cleveland. They made the difference. Both Reiner and Szell settled in the United States and became citizens Reiner in the 1920s and Szell later, after the outbreak of World War II. Reiner began his American career with two then-provincial, American orchestras the Cincinnati and Pittsburgh Symphonies while Szell joined the conducting staff of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
