Untitled Yet all are ablaze with the fire of Chopin's incomparable genius, and here pianistIvo pogorelich makes every one of them seem to jump out at the listener. http://www.mirror.org/madrigal/dichopin2.html
Extractions: 1) Nocturnes; Livia Rev / Hyperion 2CDs ($27.00) Order # CH01 The Chopin Nocturnes are the most beautiful piano works ever written, and there are many CD versions from which to choose - Artur Rubinstein's classic RCA recordings remain very popular, and in more recent times Maria Joao Pires' set on Deutsche Grammophon has likewise been a tremendous commercial success. My own favourite comes from a more obscure source, and at a much more attractive price. Though not well known, Roumanian pianist Livia Rev delivers wonderful interpretations of this timeless music, and the Hyperion sound is likewise most impressive. In a two-for-one format, this has to be regarded among the best Chopin bargains currently on compact disc. 2) Etudes; Maurizio Pollini / Deutsche Grammophon ($23.00) Order # CH02 By definition, an etude is a piece of music intended for the benefit of the performer rather than the listener, but a Chopin etude is of course something altogether different. If Chopin had never written another note of piano music in his life, the two sets of etudes opus 10 and 25 would still be more than enough to assure his place among the greatest of all composers. Almost overnight, this spectacular 1972 recording vaulted Maurizio Pollini to international stardom, and in the intervening thirty years it has consistently outsold every other recording of the Etudes made since. The second of Chopin's two piano concertos has always been somewhat overshadowed by the undeniably gorgeous E Minor Concerto No. 1, and as a result they are not recorded together as often as one might expect. Here the brilliantly gifted Martha Argerich elevates both works to a level of performance seldom scaled by anyone else on disc. Moreover, performing music in which the orchestra can often sound like it's hardly there at all, the orchestral support of Dutoit and the MSO strikes an unusually effective balance.

Extractions: * Thawing the mammoth *** A brave new world: It's only been a few weeks since eBay supposedly had a kidney for sale on its site (an unauthorized auction, of course). Now, though, we have fashion photographer Ron Harris auctioning off the eggs of some of his most luscious models. Yes, you read it correctly. Eggs. Models. And it's all legal. Now you ladies don't have to settle for your own homely DNA. Instead, borrow the chromosomes of an Elle MacPherson look-alike. But, you'll have to pay. Bidding starts at $15,000 for the very cheapest model's ovum. Men, don't despair if your buck-toothed, cross-eyed sperm is getting you down. Soon, www.ronsangels.com will have Y-chromosomes up for bid, too. You really have to shake your head that it's all come down to this. Are we so shallow that we're willing to trade money for what amounts to somebody else's pretty kid? Fortunately, though, Ron gives us a little unintentional taste of the drawback in dealing with fashion model DNA no attention to detail. As Ron says at the end of his mission statement, "You should now understand why I decided to create rons angles.com." So he can't even get his own URL right but he's shot 13 specials for Playboy television! What a guy.
