Extractions: GRAMOPHONE, June 2002 British pianist Jonathan Plowright's latest recording has attracted considerable attention in the international music press. The disc, part of Hyperion Records 'Romantic Piano Concerto' series, features the rarely heard concertos of Polish/US emigré Sigismund Stojowski. In April it was hailed as "A great musical event of world-wide proportions" and named 'Record of the Month' in the Polish national music monthly Muzyka 21. In May it was described as "A simply tremendous release... a truly great recording, an award-winner" in International Record Review magazine. In June, BBC Music Magazine wrote "Stojowski could hardly have found a better interpreter than Jonathan Plowright", while Gramophone magazine thought his "performances are a rare example of technical and musical integrity".

Extractions: Jonathan Plowright Piano "We have another marvellous natural talent on our hands" was the comment made by THE TIMES about this exciting British pianist's debut London recital. Since then critics, colleagues and audiences alike have had nothing but praise for his many national and international prizewinning performances. A Gold Medallist at the Royal Academy of Music in 1983, Jonathan is now an Associate Professor there, and in demand for masterclasses throughout the UK. In 1989 he won the European Piano Competition, and has since played all over the world. He has performed with many leading orchestras, given numerous South Bank and Wigmore Hall recitals, as well as BBC broadcasts. Jonathan's commercial recordings have all received brilliant reviews in the media. His most recent recording is the first in a set of four that feature a rare collection of pieces by Paderewski, most of which have never been recorded before. It recently received an outstanding review in Gramophone magazine. Jonathan is also very much in demand as a chamber player and has appeared with Raphael Wallfisch, Yuko Inoue, Leonid Gorokhov, as well as many ensembles including the Scottish Ensemble, Guildhall Ensemble and the Coull and Vellinger Quartets. For the past two years Jonathan has appeared at the 'Pianoworks' Festival at Blackheath Concert Halls, where he took part in solo recitals, masterclasses and massed piano concerts with amongst others, Stephen Coombs, Leslie Howard, Artur Pizarro

On his nice homepage you can hear many more sound clips, find the voices of the press, and view Jonathan's concerto repertoire. I admire this man, who doesn't just take advantage of his talent to delight audiences with his varied musical interpretations, but also gives master classes to help many other musicians understand the boundless wonderland of professional pianistic development. Being a concert pianist alone takes a special sense of perfectionism that can only be achieved and maintained through constant practice. I never had that persistance myself, so I settled for branching out into many other musical fields, which brought me good success, but I will always look in amazement upon that special breed that is called a concert pianist.

Zygmunt Stojowski (1870-1946), born in the Russian part of Poland and later a favourite pupil of Delibes in paris was a diehard romantic, who after a dazzling start, fell victim to changing taste and fashion. Yet in both his piano concertos, where yearning melody and outsize heroics are expressed in writing of the most exalted virtuosity, his energy and ardour are a glowing reminder of another age. Pianist Jonathan Plowright's perormances are a rare example of technical and musical integrity. He is backed to the hilt by Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and both sound and balance are natural and exemplary.

Extractions: A Pianist of Polish Jonathan Plowright has been dubbed one of the most accomplished and complete artists in Britain today. Playing of such calibre, such compelling musical vigour, delicacy and authority suggests something above and beyond mere thrills. His musical judgement is exemplary, with exquisite shape of phrases and range of colour. In fact, there just has to be a touch of the supernatural around Plowright's fingers - how else does he hold audiences spellbound? He now pursues an international career with performances from South Africa to the Ukraine. He has made several recordings most of which have won star ratings in the musical press. Among these are discs of music by the Polish composers Paderewski and Stojowski, both of whom will be featured in his Luton recital. Paderewski, who died in 1941, was a legendary pianist in the tradition of Liszt and Rubinstein but also became a major politician in Poland. As a composer he was known to an enormous public through one or two favourite trifles but he composed more important works such as the Humoresques de concert which Jonathan will play. Stojowski was born and brought up in Poland but later lived in Paris and finally became an American citizen. His music is steeped in the language of Tchaikovsky and Grieg, perhaps with a hint of Saint-Saëns and the sentimental lyricism of Paderewski. (Ten years Stojowski's senior, Paderewski was both teacher and friend to the younger composer). Jonathan's programme also includes three Chopin favourites - the first

Extractions: Compact Disc CDA67314 Now these really are romantic piano concertos! Stojowski was born and brought up in Poland though he later lived in Paris and finally became an American citizen. He was both virtuoso pianist and serious composer (he wrote a symphony and violin concerto as well as music for his own instrument) and his initial career was full of promise. Unfortunately for his later reputation his style was that of a previous generation and in the 20th century his music was viewed as increasingly dated. One hundred years later this hardly matters and on this CD we find works steeped in the language of Tchaikovsky and Grieg, perhaps with a hint of Saint-Saëns and the almost sentimental lyricism of Paderewski (ten years Stojowski's senior, Paderewski was both teacher and friend to the younger composer, the second concerto was dedicated to, and played by him). We are delighted to welcome Jonathan Plowright to Hyperion. He valiantly tackles the huge virtuoso demands Stojowski makes of the soloist, particularly in the first concerto. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra are playing better than ever and they are kept fully occupied in the rich and colourful scoring of both works. Recorded in Caird Hall, Dundee, on 6 7 June 2001

Extractions: The second pianoworks festival at Blackheath Halls has established this annual event as unique, and as one of the most worthwhile international piano festivals, well worth the attention of visitors from Europe (City Airport is only a quarter of an hour away!). It is masterminded by Stephen Coombs, a quiet man and undemonstrative but brilliant pianist, who recruited this year an impressive array of master pianists, several of them regular recording artists for Hyperion. They included two Leeds first prizewinners. All the concerts were shared, and there were no solo recitals. This scheme provided socialising for the artists, which they very evidently relished, and for listeners the special enlightenment which resulted from the unusual opportunity to hear different players in immediate succession on the same Steinway. The pianists also took their turns in duet and duo piano, in chamber music with instrumental ensembles and in concertos with orchestra, and there were public masterclasses for advanced conservatory students, a quiz, a silent film with improvised piano accompaniment, a demonstration of recording studio procedures and Brian Kay's Sunday Morning (the entire festival was recorded for BBC Radio 3, and there will be a week of broadcasts early next year). A feast indeed!
