His greatest achievements have been not as a pianist, but in the establishing and organizing of The Russian National Orchestra. On these records we will meet the pianist - and not the conductor. With his 40 years Pletnev is one of the youngest in this collection of the pianists of the century. The music on the CD's was recorded between 1978 - 1990, and is of course, of perfect technical standard. The music is russian - in every sense of meaning. Maybe Pletnev's own arrangements of Tchaikowsky's Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty tend to be a little kitch'ian, but in the complete Les Saisons op. 8 he is taking full revenge. Platnev is playing with technical brilliance - but also outwards, as shown in his interpretation of Tchaikowsky's 2nd piano concerto.

He was also a Gold medalist in 1975 for the Grand Prix which took place in Paris. He has performed everywhere in the world (we await your Asian tour though) and reviewers have described him as the "Devil from Moscow... [who] uses such colours that have never been drawn out of the piano before." A gifted musician, composer, conductor and pianist, his recordings of the Tchaikovsky Symphonies and Rachmaninov Symphonies on DG, where he is conductor, have won him the great praise of his fellow compatriots. Order tickets here Mikhail Pletnev Mikhail Pletnev is an artist who defies simple classification, although his early career matched the musical establishment's expectations for a virtuoso pianist of the Russian School. While pursuing a high-profile career as a concert pianist, he made his debut as a conductor in the Soviet Union in 1980, and went on to make guest appearances with many of the leading orchestras in his country. Born in Archangel, Russia in 1957, the child of musicians, he grew up in Kazan. At the age of 13 he transferred to the Central School of Music and, in 1974, entered the Moscow Conservatory studying under JaKob Hier and Lev Vlasenko. Pletnev was the Gold Medal and First Prize winner of the 1978 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow when he was only 21. His prize resulted in early international recognition and, in 1988, an invitation from President Mikhail Gorbachev to perform at the superpower summit in Washington. The resulting friendship with Gorbachev gave Pletnev the historic opportunity in 1990 to realize his long-held dream of forming an orchestra independent of the government. Attracted by Pletnev's reputation and his vision of a new model for the performing arts in Russia, many of the finest musicians in the country offered their services: the Russian National Orchestra was born. Since its inception, Pletnev has served as the RNO's music director and principal conductor.

Rachmaninov's Op 42 and Op 43 are both in variation form and well worth a comparison. The Corelli Variations are not an original theme by Corelli but an Iberian folk song. The theme itself is choice because it is memorable but any set of variations has to be carefully planned to make a unified whole or else we merely have a theme and, in this case, 22 miniature pieces based on the same thematic material. You never get the time to settle into one of these little pieces before the tempo and mood changes and you feel you it is another piece. Somehow, the famous Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op 43

They were the better for there being no forest of radio microphones or TV cameras to distract; the communion, which engaged eyes fully as ears, was contained within the auditorium space. This Beethoven piano concerto cycle in three evenings began with Strauss in sombre mood, his reference to the Beethoven Eroica adagio in Metamorphosen study for 23 solo strings I had never seen Metamorphosen played live as originally intended, and would not again wish it other. It was engrossing to watch the subtle intermingling of the strands in their many groupings. Christoph von Dohnanyi maintained a forward thrust, not really an
