Extractions: Van Cliburn Foundation FORT WORTH, TEXAS, DECEMBER 8, 2000 - During the months of January and February 2001, 137 aspiring pianists from thirty-seven countries will assemble in four European and three American cities to perform solo piano recitals for an audience and the screening jury of the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Those pianists selected by the jury will go on to participate in the Competition, scheduled to take place in Fort Worth, Texas, from May 25 through June 10, 2001. In commenting on the upcoming Van Cliburn Competition screening sessions, John Giordano, Chairman of the Jury, said: "It is important to the Foundation that our screening process take place through live concert performances rather than videotapes or other indirect methods. Everything that follows in our Competition grows out of these screening recitals; for us the Competition begins now." "The Van Cliburn Competition is one of the most important classical music competitions, featuring an outstanding group of pianists from around the world," said Edward F. Ahnert, ExxonMobil Foundation president, "we are very pleased to continue our support of the Van Cliburn Competition, an international cultural event that reinforces ExxonMobilÂ’s commitment to excellence in the arts."
