Extractions: Piano When JAVIER PERIANES (b.Nerva, Huelva, 1978) claimed victory at the 43rd International Piano Competition at Jaen, Spain in April 2001, one of the most prestigious and challenging contests of its kind in the world, he astonished the jury and the public alike for the depth and poetry of his magisterial performances, causing several critics to call him "the new Arrau". Indeed, in addition to the first prize, the jury, whose members included such distinguished musicians as Rosalyn Tureck, Dag Achatz, Guillermo Gonzalez Yukie Nagai and John Bell Young awarded him the Rosa Sabater prize for the best performance of a work of Spanish music (Albeniz's "El Polo) and for the best performance of the commissioned contemporary work. Mr. Perianes began his studies with Julia Hierro, Lucio Munoz and Maria Rambaldo. During this period he obtained top honors, as well as winning numerous prizes. He continued his studies at the Upper Conservatory in Seville with Professor Ana Guijarro, where he was awarded the End of Course Special Prize. He has taken part in a number of recitals organized by Juventudes Musicales, as well as the XV and XVI Ayonte International Festival of Music, where he made his debut together with the Festiva's Baroque Orchestra, In 1998 he took part in the Andalusian Circuit of Music, organized by the Junta (Regional Council) of Andalusia. In addition, he has performed with the Valles Symphony Orchestra at the Palau de la Musica Catalana, in Barcelona, with the Seville Royal Symphony Orchestra at the Teatro de La Maestranza, and also with the RTVE Symphony Orchesta at the Teatro Monumental in Madrid.

Extractions: during the preliminary round Arriving in Fort Worth, Texas after a week of listening via Internet to the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition put me in mind of an old Twilight Zone the players to perform a lieder recital with a singer. Can you imagine, he said with a touch of urbane diffidence, how much we could learn about the interpretive powers of the pianist compelled to collaborate in Schuberts Schwanengesang Even from the shrewdest professional, thats smart thinking. Still, his comments offered a foretaste of life inside one of the most extraordinary musical institutions of all time.

Extractions: from JOHN BELL YOUNG As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. For those in search of a recitalist who nails down every note with the blithe yet aggressive assurance of a Monday morning accountant, Lang Lang is your man. While some might attribute the poverty of Mr. Lang's imagination to his youth he is only 18 I'm afraid that is a poor excuse these days. Mr. Lang's lackluster music making and routine pianism will hardly impress anyone who has heard far superior pianists of the same age. Nor will it impress those who want music making with heart, and which reflects something more than mechanical display. Mr Lang is an ordinary, competent piano player. Recorded in concert, he cultivates a wooden, anemic sound and superficial display in favor of more probative musical values. Judging from what he offers so blandly here, his playing is merely dutiful in comparison to the heady musical bouquets offered by the best of his peers, notably the breathtaking, magical Spanish pianist, Javier Perianes (age 23); the phenomenal, poetic American, Roger Wright (age 26); the vivacious young Czech, Miron Smidak (age 21); the marvelous 20-something Freddy Kempf, and another 18 year old, Dmitri Demiashkin, a charismatic and imaginative Russian. Any one of these pianists is so many light years ahead of Lang artistically and technically as to render any comparisons futile. John Bell Young , Tampa, Florida, USA

Putney is buried in snow, as those of you who live in the east and are also buried can imagine. We probably have close to 4 feet total. Kids have been on vacation, return tomorrow (Jan. 7). Although a lovely snow cover like this makes the winter more attractive, certainly, skiing is no longer the culture of Putney in the winter, which I think is sad. The new Currier Center is leaping up towards the sky big steel beams followed pouring of concrete, which followed blasting really exciting. I think this will be a wonderful addition to Putney, and I hope you will all empty your pockets remember that your gifts will be matched! What a deal. Carry on. Post a note. Love to all, Harriet John Bell Young Melisa S. Gillis Hello Friends- I just recently had the pleasure of sharing with Clennon King (classmate of 78)his son's graduation from a two week Outward Bound adventure. It was wonderful to spend time with both of them. I continue to work on my house in Danvers, work at a Bank and am working on getting outside to enjoy summer a bit more. Kids are doing well, Kyle is doing the Caddy job this summer and having watched Caddyshack too many times, he is enjoying himself. Sarah is doing the summer day camp tour of the local camps and enjoying the sticky weather in the pools and ponds around here. Loved seeing everyone at the reunion- looking forward to Harvest Festival! To anyone in the area- living or passing through- stop by and share a picnic at the beach- a kayak on the water r just a cup of coffee. Hope all are well.

Extractions: Shipping Supplement EXCLUSIVE by JOE GARCIA A secret plan has been put before the Ministry of Defence in London seeking to increase the role of the military base by offering additional facilities. The plan has been couched in the wake of the demise of the NATO GIBMED command on the Rock. The chief minister Peter Caruana is aware of the move and confirms that "the MOD here has put up plans to London to increase the reprovisioning role of Gibraltar for ships." The aim is for Gibraltar to hold "strategic provisions." While political sources are not aware if the MOD in London has taken a decision on it, the Leader of the Opposition Joe Bossano has heard that "Gibraltar is about to take on a bigger defence role in preparing warships for action." The Commander British Forces takes the view that Gibraltar may not be in the NATO structure but it remains the headquarters of an allied nation. His thinking is that the Mediterranean and the countries adjacent to it represent an area of increasing interest "and we see Gibraltar as fulfilling a very important part of the UK defence effort."
