Maybe it's because we almost lost him a decade ago, when a persistent and career-threatening thumb injury in 1991 led to a 1996 surgery and a long recuperative period during which it was unclear whether he would ever play again. After his return, no one would ever take this pianist for granted again. Whatever the reasons, Perahia's recital at Meany Theater next Tuesday is a hotly awaited event in a springtime that is bringing a veritable parade of great pianists to the area: Andras Schiff, John O'Conor, Vladimir Feltsman, Ian Hobson (all of these within the past few weeks); Ralf Gothóni (tomorrow and Sunday with the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, 206-343-0445); and Alfred Brendel (April 16 in a Benaroya Hall recital, 206-215-4747).

During this period, he also studied with veteran pianist Mieczslaw Horszowski. In March 1972 he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and later that year won first prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition. Classical 91.5 Fm KUSC - CD Reviews what may well be the most completely satisfying version of the Goldberg Variationsyet recorded a new Sony recording (SK 89243) by pianist murray perahia. http://www.kusc.org/reviews/Perahia.shtml
Extractions: To anyone who was still musically impressionable in the 1960s that turbulent era when various cultural battle lines were being drawn, including those which surrounded the emerging Baroque Authenticity movement Glenn Gould's first recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations (Sony 38479) remains a benchmark against which all subsequent versions of the great Baroque contribution to variation form continues to be judged. Gould's complete re-thinking of the piece in 1981 was no less provocative (Sony 37779), while more recent accounts particularly the vivid Hyperion outing by Gould's young compatriot, Angela Hewitt (CDA 67305) have added to our appreciation and understanding of Bach's infinitely various invention. Now comes what may well be the most completely satisfying version of the Goldberg Variations yet recorded: a new Sony recording (SK 89243) by pianist Murray Perahia. Like Gould, Perahia possesses an enormous and instantly recognizable musical personality, yet unlike the often zany Canadian, he is less willing to let that personality intrude on his music-making. What emerges is a Goldberg Variations in which the details and insights flow with the utmost ease and naturalness, a performance in which warmth, brilliance and an almost other-worldly purity fuse into an unusually satisfying whole. As in his superb recordings of the English Suites, Perahia's approach to Bach remains wonderfully unforced and thoroughly pianistic: the playing, in its rhythmic subtlety and clarity of inner voicing is never less than sensational, while the interpretation itself is one with no stylistic axes to grind.
