MMD Archives: Dynamic Range Of The Piano Canadian pianist and educator jon kimura parker conducted a piano performancemaster class last year at Portland State University. http://mmd.foxtail.com/Archives/Digests/200104/2001.04.13.04.html
Extractions: Canadian pianist and educator Jon Kimura Parker conducted a piano performance master class last year at Portland State University. On the stage were two apparently identical Kawai grand pianos (7-foot model RX-6, I believe). Parker had played both pianos before the class began. During the class he demonstrated a fortissimo passage on one piano and asked the student to play the passage on the other piano. The student gave it his best shot but fell short of the dynamics of the master teacher. Parker then exchanged pianos with the student and had him try again; this time the student produced much better dynamic range. Parker's comment was, "That piano can handle it, this one can't!" Extractions: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Tchaikovsky's piano concerto opens with one of the world's most beloved melodies presented tantalizingly in a few highly dramatized, ecstatically romantic moments before it gives way to a contrastingly mechanical and mathematical section that ultimately leads the listener to an appropriate extension of the earlier drama and romance. However, Tchaikovsky, unlike so many other concerto composers, never returns, within the first movement or later in the work, to the exact opening melody, and the listener is left with a longing to return to it and hear it again and again, so powerful are its effect and allure. The listener is tempted to record this opening passage again and again on cassette just to be able to hear it often enough! Of course, it is important also to hear it within the context of the entire composition, so frequent hearing of the entire concerto is also a high priority. The concerto is in that elite league of compositions that one simply cannot hear enough times. A definite prototype for "too much is never enough!" One could hardly have picked a more contrasting piano concerto than Prokofiev's No. 3, unless one were to choose something from the even more "modern" Age of Sound school!! While Tchaikovsky used one rather mechanical passage in his concerto, the mechanical dominates the tone and structure of Prokofiev's. Even so, Prokofiev achieves a melodic line and drama unknown in the works of so many of his contemporaries.

Vivaldi's Four Seasons is one of the best known examples of "programme" music music that depicts people, places or moods, and tells a visual tale. From happy birds and bubbling brooks, to the hearty fun of a harvest festival and skaters sliding and falling on ice, The Four Seasons triumphs, and it could not be in better hands than those of superstar violinist Pinchas Zukerman. Vivaldi's masterpiece is central to the NAC Orchestra's Canada Tour, performed coast-to-coast in 1999. The music plays a prominent role in the important educational outreach of the Canada Tour, focussing on Vivaldi and the environment. The CD also includes Haydn's

They agreed to perform together, but new repertoire was necessary. The obvious choice of composer was Szigeti's compatriot, Bela Bartok (1881-1945), who could also perform with them as pianist. Szigeti wrote to Bartok, who completed the composition within the month. A Verbunkos is a vigorous Hungarian dance performed by army recruiting officers, dressed in full regalia, who try to persuade young men to enlist. The Piheno, the Hungarian word for repose, was added to the work after its 1939 premiere. For the Sebes, or fast dance, the violinist must use a second violin tuned to the notes G sharp, D, E flat, creating the effect of a dance macabre. The slower middle section is based on the asymmetrical Bulgarian dance rhythm of 3+2+3+2+3. The work concludes with a violin cadenza and a display of colorful effects from all three instruments.
