Please let your ordering (and patience) be guided accordingly! REINHOLD GLIERE (1875-1956): Violin Concerto in G Minor, Op. 100 (compl. Lyatoshinsky), Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 25. Begun in the year of his death, Gliere's violin concerto exists only as the first movement which was completed and orchestrated from sketches by the Ukrainian composer Boris Lyatoshinsky. Lasting 17-and-a-half minutes, the movement has an immediately memorable first theme, somewhat exotic in character, which wends its way through rich, lush orchestration which is utterly anachonistic for 1956 but also utterly appealing to anyone who loves the music of such late 19th-century Russians as Glazunov. The symphony, from 1907 and recorded by Chandos recently, is a 50-minute work with pronounced folk elements in all four of its movements and firmly in the heroic-romantic tradition of Borodin and Glazunov. Extractions: 1. Who was Paderewski? November 6th marks the anniversary of the birth of the most famous and popular pianist of all times - Ignacy Jan PADEREWSKI (1860-1941). Although discouraged by his teachers from becoming a pianist, he launched his artistic career in 1885 and literally swept the world with his playing and his dynamic personality. In 1932 American president Franklin Delano Roosevelt called him a Modern Immortal and two years later in a book written by author Charles Phillips, The Story of a Modern Immortal, the introduction began as follows, "It is difficult to write of Paderewski without emotion. Statesman, orator, pianist and composer, he is a superlative man, and his genius transcends that of anyone I have ever known. Those of us who love Poland are glad that she can claim him as a son, but let her always remember that Ignace Jan Paderewski belongs to all mankind." Yes, here was a personality that was not one in a million, but perhaps one in a century; an "artist of such a distinctly pronounced individuality as to be an exceedingly rare occurence -indeed - phenomenal." Paderewski was a genius, an intellectual, a "statesman par excellence;" a beautiful orator in a language that was not his; a linguist who spoke no less than seven languages fluently; a great musician; a patriot; and most of all, a humanitarian who was so generous that every act of kindness to him was always returned manifold.

Extractions: Georges Longy by Barbara Jeskalian San Jose, California In the initial pamphlet describing the aims of the Longy Club, Georges Longy tells his readers and listeners: 'I propose to give a series of public concerts in Boston, at which a number of works especially written for wind instruments will be performed. These will consist of solos, duos, trios, quartets and the like. The public hitherto has had little opportunity to hear such works performed; and yet the great masters, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and others, wrote highly interesting compositions for these instruments ... At the present time the array of artists composing the BSO makes possible any desired combination of instruments, and the obstacles formerly existing have been obviated. The principal instruments which will form the fundamentals of these concerts will be the Flute, the Oboe, the Clarinet, the Horn and the Bassoon..." There would be a different configuration of the ten performers that comprised the Longy Club throughout the years, but its one constant would be Georges Longy. In the fourteen years of its existence, founded in 1900, the Longy Club would change personnel a number of times, but two additional constants would be the quality of musicianship of the players as well as a catholic taste in the Club's programming. Before he joined the Boston Symphony for the 1898-99 season as first chair oboe, an event that would be precursor to the establishment of the Longy Club, Georges Longy had had a distinguished career in Paris. He was a section player with the Opera Comique and the Lamoureux, and the principal oboe with Colonne's Follies Bergere. While he received distinction with these orchestras in the country of his birth, he would exceed the name he developed there by his success and reputation with the Boston Symphony.

Extractions: London recordings from 1912 - 1995 Vienna, 1907: Ignaz Friedman, then an upcoming twenty-five year-old pianist, sighed to a relative: "Mark Hambourg! Er macht besser!" [He does it better!]. Despite a legacy of nearly two hundred recordings and two vivid, informative autobiographies, Mark Hambourg (1879-1960) has become an enigmatic, forgotten figure. Some of his recordings make one agree with Friedman. Yet Hambourg did not like the studio atmosphere, or specific works selected by his producers: some wayward results have discouraged listeners from seeking Hambourg's great performances, which place him among the finest artists ever captured on disc. Was it possible to learn how his art developed, whether it was truly represented and its aftermath? While compiling a Hambourg CD in 1994, it seemed imperative to reissue his performance of Beethoven's C minor Piano Concerto, as it contained Moscheles' cadenzas. Equally compelling was a recording of the little known Concerto Pathetique for two pianos by Liszt: joining Hambourg was his 14 year-old daughter Michal. Their collaboration bears a remarkable unity of ensemble and ideas. It is hard to discern who took which part, as both play as equals. Hambourg lauded Michal in his writings, for she had reached musical maturity under his guidance. Was she still alive, and if so, where? Had she preserved or imparted her family's musical knowledge and documents? As the Liszt recording dates from 1934, one feared that the Hambourg legacy could have disappeared.

Extractions: Score editions and editorial traditions Historical context 1. First editions 1. Source-critical editions 2. The critical-heuristic tendency ... Some editions of Chopin's selected works Since their creation, Frédéric Chopin's works have enjoyed a steady popularity among both performers and the public. 150 years of success have generated a constant need for new score editions. Their abundance and variety have urged us to classify this interesting "production" and to explain the source of the phenomenon. It is worth stressing that the term "tradition" as applied to editorial practice and performing traditions can only be understood historically. The source of this tradition can be seen in a number of "tendencies" in the interpretation of the musical text. Over the years these tendencies have gradually shaped into performing and editorial traditions and as such can today be subjected to scientific study. It seems necessary, in order to properly understand this deceptively simple genesis, to examine all historical editorial criteria, since specific editions have usually seen the light as fruit of several combined conditions. A matter of particular relevance is the purely commercial element of the editorial policy of publishing houses, who were motivated mainly by financial profits. The appearance of new editions was an answer to the requirements of the musical market. Publishers knew they were running few risks as Chopin's works have always sold well.
