Extractions: SOLO PIANISTS "Artur, you will never be a pianist. You are a musician." These prophetic words were uttered by the legendary early 20th century teacher, Theodor Leschetizky, to his young student, Artur Schnabel. "In later years, Schnabel took special delight in repeating Leschetizky's prophecy as a paradox, because he himself could never make any distinction between pianist and musician, even for his pupils. And, in his own case, the musician and the pianist were completely fused - though the pianist remained always the servant of the musician."*

Extractions: The US House of Representatives passes 349-23, and sends to the President for signature, H.R.700, already approved by the Senate, reauthorizing a 1997 law that created the Asian Elephant Conservation Fund and allocating to it up to $25 million over the next five years. It also reauthorizes the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, which since its creation in 1984 has funded more than 5000 projects to conserve fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats. There are only 35'000 to 50'000 Asian elephants in the wild, most of them in India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. The elephants, which require a shady forest environment, are threatened by poachers and a growing human population that endangers their habitat.

Extractions: Mozart in 19 th -Century New Orleans by John H. Baron To put these half dozen Figaro performances in New Orleans in perspective: during the years 1836 to 1841, Davis French theater put on 364 performances of 65 operas by 27 composers, while Caldwells English opera put on dozens more. [6] Or, statistcally, Figaro constituted less than 1% of the opera fare of New Orleans in the two decades of the 1820s and 1830s. Then, after 1840, Figaro was a forgotten opera in New Orleans. The Magic Flute was enjoyed more for its suggested spookiness rather than for its full-blooded drama or its music, but in any case it was entirely ignored by the local companies. Instead, it was performed in New Orleans by traveling companies. It had five performances in German at the German National Theatre during the season 1868 to 1869. Later it was revived in Italian as Il flauto magico, performed by a traveling troupe during the 1881 to 1882 season at the French Opera House. As for Mozarts other operas, they did not get staged performances until the 20th century. Cosí fan Tutte was not performed here until 1937. Since we did not have our own opera company then, this performance was by the Salzburg Opera Guild, a traveling company. Die Entführung aus dem Sereil was performed in New Orleans for the first time in 1946 by the present New Orleans Opera Company which was founded in 1943.

Extractions: Here's an excerpt from a letter Haydn sent from London to a friend back home in Vienna describing the crossing the channel to Dover and his first impressions of the British capital: "During the entire crossing I remained on deck, in order to sate my eyes with that monstrous animal, the sea. So long as there was no wind, I was not afraid, but finally as the wind grew stronger and I saw the high unruly waves breaking against the ship, I felt a little alarm, and with it a little nausea. However, I overcame it and came safely into the harbor without vomiting. Most of the other passengers, however, were sick, and looked like ghosts. Even so, I took two days to recover, but now am quite brisk and merry again, and am looking at London. The vast city quite amazes me by its various beauties and wonders. My arrival made a great stir all over the town. For 3 days I was bandied about in all the papers. Everyone is curious to meet me. I have already been obliged to eat out 5 times, and might be invited every day if I would, but have to consider my health, not to mention my work!" ALSO ON THIS DATE:
