You could also say it the other way around: there in that narrow dark street is living a composer who happens to be also an outstanding pianist. We are talking about MARIUS VAN PAASSEN. a classical musician, who made the front-page on several occasions.... To create new music nowadays isn't easy, if you want to be original and ear pleasing at the same time. Van Paassens music is modern and unmistakably original, but it communicates nevertheless with people, yes even with people that are not used to contemporary music. Nevertheless it is difficult to break through internationally for our Dutchman. The classical music world is a very traditional world, just as dogmatic as the contemporary art-music scene. Working for years on a large number of piano-compositions and orchestral scores in the relative solitude of his modest apartment Van Paassen developed a personal musical style. For audiences it is very interesting to hear a pianist play Schubert or Mozart and his own compositions as well. At recitals by Van Paassen classical music isn't a dead museum- like art of the past, but a living art.
