Extractions: NSU orchestra performs Peter and the Wolf By Bob Pore - Campus Reporter On Nov. 18 at 4:00 p.m., the University Civic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Fokkens, performed Peter and the Wolf by Sergey Prokofiev, and Ludwig van Beethovens Third Piano Concerto Peter and the Wolf However, that was not the case for Beethovens Third Piano Concerto . The french horns were sometimes a little too loud and would drown out the rest of the orchestra. Despite this, they could play quietly when necessary, and the piano soloist, John Owings, could always be heard. Owings is a magnificent pianist, and he played the solo part very well, always managing to keep up with the pace in the first and third movements. And the orchestra, when it wasnt being drowned out, provided him with good accompaniment. Overall, it was a very good concert. This site designed by

Extractions: Joaquín Achúcarro made his London debut with the London Symphony Orchestra after his victory at the Liverpool International Competition, and was awarded the Harriet Cohen Medal to the Best Debut of the Year. Since then he has made an international career in 59 countries. Mr. Achúcarro is currently holder of the E. Tate Chair at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, as well as maintaining a busy concert schedule. He has received in his home Country, Spain, the two highest honors in the Arts: the Premio Nacional de Musica 1992 by the Spanish Government, and the Gold Medal of Fine Arts 1996 by King Juan Carlos of Spain. Eileen Tate Cline earned her doctorate degree "with highest distinction" as a Danforth Fellow at Indiana University. She was Dean of the Peabody Institute Conservatory of Music, serving in that capacity from 1983 to 1995. Her retirement from the university was marked by a gathering of distinguished panelists and musicians for a symposium entitled The Arts in America: Lifeblood of a Nation and its Citizens - past, present, and future. An award-winning author/educator, Dr. Cline has served on the Advisory Boards of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Since winning the coveted Gold Medal at the Seventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, José Feghali has emerged as a major presence on the concert stage, having appeared in over 450 performances worldwide. His recordings include Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 with the Philharmonia Orchestra, an all-Chopin solo recital album, and music by Schumann and Mozart. A child prodigy in his native Brazil, he studied with Maria Curzio in London at age 15 and was later awarded a full scholarship to study with Christopher Elton, Head of Keyboard at the Royal Academy of Music. Mr. Feghali is Artist-in-Residence at TCU.

Extractions: May 28, 1999 Task forces appointed by President Dave Frohnmayer following a May 18 sit-in at Johnson Hall have begun addressing issues of racial diversity and personal safety raised by students during the peaceful protest. Dave Hubin, executive assistant president, says the work groups expect to prepare draft materials by the end of spring term and will continue their work this fall as their focus shifts toward longer-term goals of helping to make the university a more safe and welcoming environment for everyone. The task forces leaders and their assignments are: Robert Melnick, Architecture and Allied Arts dean, who is working with Public Safety and the students in the Planning, Public Policy and Management class who received threatening e-mail letters. Their goal is to ensure the safety of the students. Tom Hager, Communications director, who is working with President Frohnmayer and a group of student volunteers to craft a letter or statement to submit to the Oregon Daily Emerald and other media outlets. They also are working with students to draft a statement supporting zero tolerance of hate crimes. Their goal is to craft a statement that can be embraced by the university community and shared widely with the larger community. Dan Williams, Administration vice president, Wes Morrill, dean of student life, and other members of the Student Life staff and a group of student volunteers who have begun reviewing policies protecting victims of hate crimes and sanctioning offenders. They will draft language that could strengthen the policies.
