Extractions: Laurel Bennert Ohlson has held the position of associate principal horn with the National Symphony Orchestra since 1980. She appears frequently on the NSO chamber music series, and is a member of National Musical Arts, the Capitol Woodwind Quintet, Music at Eden's Edge, and the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Ohlson especially enjoys descant-horn playing, appearing occasionally with the Washington Bach Consort, and also enjoys performing on the Wagner Tuba. She has appeared as a guest artist in recitals and clinics at International Horn Society Workshops and International Women's Brass Conferences, and has been on the IWBC board of directors for the past six years. Ms. Ohlson is a faculty member at Catholic University and teaches privately. A magna cum laude graduate of Boston University, Ms. Ohlson majored in horn performance and mathematics. While in Boston, she was a member of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Berkshire Brass Quintet, and Boston Wind Quintet, and performed with the Boston Opera Company and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, accompanying the BSO on their 1979 tour of China. Extractions: November 2-4, NSO Assistant Conductor Takao Kanayama leads the orchestra in a lush, varied program that features Benjamin Lees'Constellations, Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64. The extraordinary 14-year-old Korean pianist Joyce Yang makes her NSO debut in these dazzling concerts, playing with her trademark "vitality and elegance" (The Orlando Sentinel). Fire lights up the night in a spine-tingling program of musical mythology, as stellar soprano Margaret Jane Wray joins conductor James Conlon and the NSO November 16-18. Three works-Beethoven's Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, Op. 43; Goldmark's Overture Prometheus Bound, Op. 38; and Liszt's Prometheus (Symphonic Poem No. 5)-focus on the legend of the man who dared to defy the gods and give fire to humans and paid a hefty price. The program concludes with excerpts from Wagner's thunderous opera Götterdämmerung ("Twilight of the Gods"), the final work in his epic Ring Cycle that includes the famous self-immolation of heroine Brünnhilde.

Extractions: Anne-Sophie Mutter 's survey of 20 th Century music in her repertoire is being promoted in a series of recitals and orchestral concerts, in association with the release of a 4-CD Deutsche Grammophon compilation of recordings from 1988-1997. She commands a wide following and was able to fill the Barbican for music by Bartok, Webern, Crumb, Penderecki and others who may be less off-putting to a general audience, but with nothing really to pull them in apart from her own reputation. It was an inspired choice to begin with Webern's Four Pieces Op 7 (1910), tiny elusive miniatures which established immediately that the audience had to actively listen. The third 'hovers on the edge of inaudibility' and coughs which broke the spell sounded like gunfire! Respighi's sonata did not demonstrate that its neglect is undeserved. George Crumb's characteristic Four Nocturnes (1964) required a separate prepared piano for its kaleidoscopic colouristic effects
Extractions: In 1998 the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter dedicated herself to what was no doubt the most important project of her career to date. She performed all ten violin sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven on a world tour with the pianist Lambert Orkis. It was a climax in the longtime collaboration between the two artists. The live recording of the sonatas was released in fall 1998, while the tour was still underway. For this recording, the two artists won a prestigious Grammy Award in February 2000. Anne-Sophie Mutter's dazzling career began when the thirteen-year-old girl caught the attention of Herbert von Karajan, who promptly hired her to concertize with the Berlin Philharmonic. Today she numbers among the greatest violinists in the world. "For two hours we take part in a wonderfully spontaneous, edgy, witty, but at times also introspective dialogue - amazingly assured, freely phrased, masterfully braving every technical obstacle "

Extractions: Vibrancy And Soul From Cellist Young German delivers at Herbst The 24-year-old German made a brief but impressive local appearance in February, joining violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and pianist Lambert Orkis for a performance of Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2. His more recent solo turn, again presented by San Francisco Performances, confirmed the promise of the earlier outing. Shostakovich's D-Minor Sonata, Op. 40, closed the program in a dark, probing and full-voiced reading. The encores were Glazunov's lovely "Chant du menestral" and a zippy, uncredited arrangement of Brahms' "Hungarian Dance" No. 5.
