Extractions: Latest News: On February 13 th 2003 in the Barbican Centre the London Symphony Orchestra will give the world premiere of Penumbra by Jonathan Cole , conducted by George Benjamin. Penumbra was commissioned by the LSO with additional funds from the Britten-Pears Foundation as a companion piece to Oliver Knussens Two Organa , which unusually is scored for an orchestral wind section plus piano and harmonium, but only solo strings. Penumbra explores the relationship between objects and their dark reflections. The composer writes: Dancing shapes distorting objects, following them around, leading them on their way and giving away their secrets. The time is midnight, the air is silent and the only sounds are muffled footsteps escaping from darkness. Corners are the sanctuary for the guilt which haunts our dreams . The British composer Graham Fitkin has signed an agreement with Ricordi London. Graham is probably best known in this country from his performances as a pianist with The Graham Fitkin Group. Whenever possible I like to be closely involved in the performance of my own music. Rather than work in isolation, I prefer working with performing musicians and enjoy developing relationships over time. I especially enjoy the ongoing dialogue with the musicians in this ensemble. Working with these players allows me to develop my music with them, respond to their ideas and write music specifically for them.

Beecham): The Great Elopement (excerpts) Sir Thomas Beecham conducts Royal Philharmonic, 1947-1951 Dutton 2CDs - EA 5026 75:23; 76:02 (Distrib. Harmonia Mundi) Taken from that particularly fertile recording period, 1947-51, in the career of Sir Thomas Beecham (1879-1961), these wonderful restorations should appeal to every lover of orchestral ensemble, especially when the quality of musicianship is superb and the repertory scintillating! Beecham was one of the first to recognize the lush beauty of Dvorak's late tone-poems after Erben; only Vaclav Talich competed with Beecham in the Golden Spinning Wheel, and despite the resonant sympathy of Talich's Czech Philharmonic, they play an edition cut by some 100 bars and 5 minutes' duration. Though Beecham would return to the studio for later renditions of Saint-Saens, Mendelssohn, Berlioz, Delius, Mehul, Handel and Massenet, these inscriptions possess a vitality and brio that surpass virtually any other interpreter of these works, given that in a few instances, like Mitropoulos' NBC reading of King Lear, a truly superior incarnation exists.

Extractions: C LASSICAL CDs for October John Sunier Mnemosyne - The Hilliard Ensemble and Jan Garbarek, saxophones - ECM New Series 1700/01 (2 CDs): The first cross-referencing of early vocal polyphony with contemporary improvisation on the saxophone was Officium, five years ago on this same innovative label. During that time Garbarek and the vocal quartet of the Hilliards have traveled the world performing in many different churches and cathedrals. Their repertory has changed and developed. The freedoms that Garbarek takes with his sax improvisations has inspired the singers to also take more chances; after all, improvisation was a much greater aspect of early music than is found in classical music today. MAHLER-BRIGGS: Symphony No. 5 in E sharp minor - David Briggs, organ of Gloucester Cathedral - Priory PRCD 649: Another trip in reverberant sounds. Organist Briggs has tackled this immense work with great aplomb, showing us a view of Mahler's music from a different pew. Piano transcriptions of great orchestral music came about because before the phonograph that was the best way for more people to hear the music. Though most people had a piano in the parlor, not many had a pipe organ. But the organ has many more possibilities as an orchestral stand-in than the piano, and shows them to fine degree in this transcription, which is a first recording. Fascinating listening; many passages sound like they come right out of one of the French organ symphonies by Widor, Vierne et al. Just for Me - Noriko Ogawa Plays Japanese Piano Music - BIS-CD-854:

A disc of rare orchestral music adds two CD premieres to the catalogue: 1915's Evangelio ("Gospel"), an early tone poem and El Castillo..., an orchestral transcription of a 1931 piano piece which describes an Andalusian landmark in three richly sonorous, melodious and colorful movements. The rarely recorded "symphony" (1920) is a tone poem also, whose three movements depict the city of Seville in all its vibrancy and brilliance as well as its relaxed grace. Ritmos is a dance fantasy from 1928 which depicts a march from the darkness of night to the dazzling Spanish sunshine of full daylight. Orquesta Filarmonica de Gran Canaria; Adrian Leaper.
