Nathaniel Dett, the Most Promising Pianist Award, and the Mary Louisa Catlin Award at the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition. Chapman Nyaho's performing experience includes solo recitals in Ghana, England, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, and various cities across the United States. In 1996 he gave the world premiere of the Rosewood Concerto with the African American Philharmonic of Atlanta, Georgia and has also performed as soloist with the Greensboro Philharmonia, the Lexington Symphony, the Hendersonville Symphony, and the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. Chapman Nyaho, a native of Ghana, West Africa, will give two recitals at Whitworth College on Tuesday, March 13. The first concert will take place during the college's weekly Showcase program, which is held from 11 a.m. to noon in Cowles Memorial Auditorium. Chapman Nyaho's evening recital will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Building Recital Hall. Both recitals are free and open to the public. Voted three times by Whitworth students as favorite guest artist, Chapman Nyaho will also hold individual clinics with music students on Monday. Chapman Nyaho studied at Achimota School and then earned degrees from Peter's College, Oxford University (UK), the Eastman School of Music and the University of Texas at Austin. He also studied at the Conservatoire de Musique de Geneve, Switzerland. "In my teens, people started saying I should become a banker or something, so I wouldn't spend my life poor," he said. "But my dad told me to keep doing what I loved to do." That was piano. He is distinguished music professor at Northwestern University. 50TH REUNION, OCTOBER 17-19, 1997 Margaret Heidner George '47E sends word of a new compact disc of an orchestral work by her late husband, Earl George '47E (Mas), '59E (PhD). The piece, Introduction and Allegro, is performed by the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra, Jerzy Swoboda conducting, on a CD entitled "Modern American Classics, Volume II." She tells us, "The piece was first performed in 1946 by the Eastman Rochester Symphony under Howard Hanson. In 1947 it received the George Gershwin Memorial Prize and was performed by the New York City Symphony conducted by Leonard Bernstein and later in Carnegie Hall by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Charles Munch." While at Eastman, Earl George studied with Hanson and Bernard Rogers.
