His international career began with a series of recitals and concerts in the four continents where he established his reputation as one of the foremost pianists of his time. On disc, Nelson Freire has made astonishingly few recordings. His first recording released in 1968 stunned the American critics and since then, each rare recording he made has been snapped up and treasured by the piano cognoscenti. In October 2001, Mr Freire signed an exclusive contract with Decca and has just recorded a programme of solo Chopin works which will be released in Spring 2002.

Extractions: (Koch) [2CD] 133 minutes Some pianists just have everything, and for the most part, Guiomar Novaes was one of them. In this all-too-brief survey of her studio and concert recordings at the zenith of a remarkable career, what emerges is a picture of an artist who was far more comfortable and persuasive in front of an audience than in front of a microphone. Nevertheless, this document preserves for posterity the kind of free flowing plasticity, insouciant charm and gentility of phrasing that made her famous. Errors abound in the liner notes, misstating the keys of certain works (we are told , for example, that the Chopin B flat minor sonata is in the major, and that the 13th Prelude is in F sharp minor, instead of F sharp major). Two mazurkas (op. 41:1 and the posthumous A minor) go entirely uncredited. A citation from a review of Novaes by Virgil Thomson implies he had written an appraisal of the performance heard here. It was not, but was the curmudgeonly critic's reaction to an unpublished recording. ORDER THIS CD FROM CROTCHET

St. Petersburg, Feb. 12, 1851; d. same, Aug. 18, 1914) , and in celebration the Voice of Russia added her biography to their website under her currently correct English spelling of ANNA YESIPOVA. A remarkable pianist by all accounts, the biography states that she did not begin serious piano studies until age 13 when she was enrolled in the St. Petersburg Conservatory where she studied under Leschetizky. After several years of concert tours in her mid-twenties, she married Leschetizky and they taught together in Vienna in the 1880's. Upon their divorce in 1892 she returned to Russia and taught in the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1893-1908. Her playing was likened to Liszt by the magical effect it produced, an unlimited variety of touch and color, and her stamina and strength was amazing. Biographers in English have had to choose between the names Anna or Annette and Essipova or Essipoff, but now Groves has adopted the same spelling as this Russian biography, that of YESIPOVA, which "Women at the Piano" will also adopt.
