Originally appeared in La Folia Concert at Columbia University, New York. November 15, 1999. Performed by Ensemble 21, and electronics created at IRCAM. In Quest of Spirit These insights sounded in the five works heard at the concert. The longest piece, Song Offerings Gitanjali . The instrumental parts glistened at the concert, but the impressive singing did not match the profundity of the texts in some parts. The soprano writing, which emphasizes very high notes as well as the passaggio transitional range, requires non-standard techniques of vibrato. Judith Bettina seemed to sacrifice details of vibrato (specified in the score) in favor of emotional projection (as didPenelope Walmsley-Clark in the Nimbus recording). Tombeau de Messiaen (1994), for piano and DAT tape, received a spirited performance by pianist Marilyn Nonken. The work blends the live (equal-tempered) piano with pre-recorded piano sounds tuned to twelve different harmonic series. Harvey works with the ambiguity of the two tunings through skillful transitions and overlapping. If I understand correctly, he sees ambiguity as a way of spiritually transcending duality. Extractions: It might be easy, calling the Sophisticates a ska band, but the label doesn't fit. Ska enters the discussion because the background of the group's founding members, including Dan Fernandez (vocals) and Jeff Carpenter (drums), includes such fondly regarded Milwaukee ska bands as Highball Holiday and the International Jet Set. But listening to the Sophisticates' demo, you can see it's not so. Echoes of ska, maybe. Reggae with a strong dose of pop is more on the mark. On "Plausible Romance," the soulful lover's rock tease in Fernandez's voice is braced by a horn section-Zach Flodeen (sax), Ron Knaflic (trombone)-piping around the slightly aching melody. "Greystone" is more uptempo and poppier stlll, more Johnny Nash than Bob Marley, with a splash of hip-hop self-confidence and some hot solos. One thing that's not especially audible on the surface, but makes itself felt nonetheless, are the jazz influences brought by Flodeen, Knaflic and keyboardist Scott McCormick. "I'm grounded in pop melodies and major chords," Fernandez says. "Jazz brings in dissonance and minor chords-a different way of making music. A lot of the old ska came from great jazz musicians in Jamaica. It's kind of old school and it changes the way we approach things." Anchoring it all are the assured rhythms of Carpenter, guitarist Tim Pierce and bassist Jeff Villwock, laying the foundations for a rapidly accumulating batch of original songs.
