Extractions: The benefit recital features Cuban pianist Javier Gonzalez, playing Chopin in his U.S. debut TEN YEARS AGO, James Gardner decided to fulfill his lifelong dream of starting an orchestra. With the help of a few friends, he founded the Pro Art Symphony, running the startup group out of his Walnut Creek home. This week, Pro Art launches its 10th anniversary season, and Gardner says no one is happier or more surprised than he is. "It's fantastic," says the conductor. "This is a big deal for us." In tough economic times, keeping an orchestra afloat is no easy feat. But Gardner has overcome the odds by keeping costs down and playing the music audiences want to hear. "We're very frugal," says Gardner, who has only one part-time paid employee. "I wear a lot of hats: I write press releases, put stamps on envelopes, hire the musicians, rent the halls. That's how we're able to survive." Gardner, a Juilliard-trained musician who teaches piano in his spare time, started the orchestra in 1993 with fellow musician James Greening. He did it, he says, to give himself a chance to conduct. "The whole thing was kind of an experiment," says Gardner. "In the beginning, we decided to do a couple of concerts and see how it went. It was an all-volunteer thing, but the players really enjoyed it."
