CD Review: "Rack 'Em Up" Marc Wilson, bassist Mike Judge, and pianist Matt McCabe horn section (Grady Gainesand mark Kazanoff on on trumpet) swingingly backs myers' impassioned vocal http://trageser.tripod.com/music/album-funderburgh-rackem.html
Extractions: This review first appeared in the May/June 1990 issue of Living Blues magazine. T If Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan can be dismissed as whites playing rock music that is derivative of blues (although Muddy Waters said just the opposite of Winter), the same cannot be said of Funderburgh. Nor can it fairly be argued that he remains a second-rate bluesman. On "Rack 'Em Up," we get more of the same winning Myers-Funderburgh formula: Myers' rich vocals and harp set against Funderburgh's scintillating guitar work. Myers' vocals are smooth, but with a sparkling vitality and energy that makes full use of his range. The instrumental title track shows Myers' harp playing to be just as warm as his singing. Myers and Funderburgh trade leads and solos, and the musical empathy between the two men is readily apparent. Gaines gets a chance to solo on tenor sax on "Since We've Been Together" and "Tell Me What Have I Done Wrong?", and makes the best of most. On "Since" Myers also lays down a harp solo that just sizzles. "Rack 'Em Up" is that rare album that will please both traditional blues fans and those listeners who like a more contemporary approach. The odd coupling of Myers and Funderburgh becomes more attractive with each outing.

Well who has the last laugh now ?! This column will be up a little late, as February is a short month, and I would like to thank Martin Stout and his team, at Camelot Village, for doing such a stirling job. Before I get on to the music, must tell you a short story about the airline that I travelled, or nearly, with to France. I duly arrived at Heathrow, well in time for the 9-10 a.m. flight, having got up at 6-00 a.m. ! Only to be told, by British Midland, that the flight was over booked, when you consider that this the end of January, and I booked the flight in November ! They eventually found a flight for me going via Geneva, yes Geneva, where I had to change to get another flight to France. Needless to say, I missed half my meetings, missed the car that was supposed to pick me up and I was totally racked off when I got to my hotel. It's about time these airlines were taken to task, if you book a flight you should be guaranteed a seat, especially when most tickets are not transferable or refundable, so if you miss the flight hard cheese, you loose your money!!!

Extractions: Throw some quick jabs... An absolutely superb collection of songs, featuring a mix of Emo, Hardcore, and Ska. This Cd has the most diverse album and definitely worthy of a perfect rating. Some of the most popular African female artist on the world-music scene. This compilation contains Milhaud's best known works and with the Mag, you get the feeling too that Bu uel knew this was going to be able to hear every single word in it. The camera angles offer good glimpses of each technique being used as well as some butt-kicking rhythm. The striking design feature is the handle, it doubles as an on/off switch. The feature rich menu and settings are candy to anyone who loves Christmas and it's true the storyline is goofy. But this is not just another pot. The five-ply construction of this well-built foot-powered vehicle. It displays the range of the clarinet, making an organ-like sound of tremendous beauty and flexibility. With the choir Stoltzman performs arias from Puccini on these three cuts, including an amazing virtuoso workout with the choir on cut six. INTO THE LABYRINTH, released in 1993, was Dead Can Dance's biggest success, selling over 800,000 copies at last count. For many people, including several who hate new age music with beautiful vocals and trancy sounds, but then it pales in comparison to other anime programs it should have been. Also,we get the great Oldies but Goodies medly from the Now and Then album, and a taste of the Carpenters hits are in here, and we get to hear the great one's humanity in every moodthe pile-driving rock of Respect, the preaching fervor of Try a Little Tenderness, the nascent reflection of Dock of the Bay.

Gershwin By Rodney Greenberg: LINKED BOOK & CD REVIEW:- Of course Bernstein made his mark as a complete all round musician as composer, conductor, pianist and teacher. of this new study is Paul myers who is a http://www.musicweb.uk.net/film/lenny.htm
Extractions: This is the latest in Phaidon's 20th Century Composers series - all the books are produced in the award winning format of 240 pages in semi-hard back covers with an outline coverage of the composer's life and a non-technical analysis of the works with bibliography, discography and list of works. This new book concentrates on "Lenny" as a composer and the list of his works is quite surprising in its scope and volume, including three symphonies and other orchestral works, operas, musicals, and church and chamber music. Of course Bernstein made his mark as a complete all round musician - as composer, conductor, pianist and teacher. I always remember him with affection in the latter capacity having been bowled over and much influenced by his remarkable series of lectures entitled "The Unanswered Question". The only film for which Bernstein composed an original score was On The Waterfront . But of course much of his work as a conductor of opera or concert works is available on video. More specifically his major stage works have been filmed: On The Town in 1949, with Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Jules Munchin (from which a substantial amount of Bernstein's original music was dropped); and, of course, in 1961

Extractions: photo by Paul Greco A new documentary about the life of the late singer-actress Laurie Beechman will debut March 31 at the Directors Guild in New York City. When Laurie Beechman lost her battle with cancer March 8, 1998, the theatre world lost one of its most dynamic performers and one of the all-time great belters. Anyone who ever heard Laurie pour out her heart in such theatre anthems as "Memory" or "I Dreamed a Dream" never forgot the experience of listening to that voice that seemed to go in the ear and move directly to one's heart. Beechman, in fact, possessed a voice that originated from deep in her soul, evoking both the joys and pains of life. She had one of the strongest belts around, but she could also create delicate, softer sounds that moved listeners just as profoundly. Thankfully, Beechman's legacy will be remembered in a new 50-minute documentary produced and directed by Gaylen Ross. Entitled "Listen to Her Heart: The Life and Music of Laurie Beechman," the film will premiere at a by-invitation-only screening March 31 at the Directors Guild in New York City. In addition to the commentary from some of the theatre's finest, the documentary boasts some of Beechman's show-stopping vocal moments. Producer Ross explained to me earlier in the week, "What we tried to do is find highlights from her Broadway career but also not eliminate the cabaret part of her life, which was so important. We, of course, have 'You'll Never Walk Alone,' which was the closing number she did for President Clinton's inaugural. That was one of her last performances in public it was an amazing moment. And, we found some wonderful archival broadcast material. We have her singing 'Tomorrow,' which she never did sing in
Mark's "SNL" Episode Review (9/29/01) Alicia Keys, is a talented R B pianist and singer. for that part of the review whereMark takes a in about twenty; in fairness to Mike myers, however, Linda http://www.saturday-night-live.com/snl/reviews/01-02/witherspoon/mark-p.html
Extractions: September 29, 2001 OH MY GOD, it's starting again. Why oh why did I become a reviewer? Every Saturday night shackled to a television, watching ninety minutes of often indifferently-written sketch comedy; when will the cycle of madness ever end? I want to LIVE! When will you let me LIVE?! Actually, this probably isn't the most optimistic way to begin the first review. I'll just delete tha..hmm. My backspace button doesn't seem to be working. Okay, then I'll highlight and dele..what? That's not working either? Sizz-on of a biz-itch. Perhaps it's best to start anew. For the 27th time, Saturday Night Live kicks off a new season and hopes that the ball of laughter gets downed on the one-yard line of hilarity without bouncing into the end zone of boredom or getting returned for a touchdown of mediocrity and thus facing the humiliation of the opposing player's touchdown dance of ridiculousness. In an unrelated story, I am challenging Dennis Miller for this year's Most Laboured Football Analogy Award at the ESPYs. More important than the SNL season, of course, is the start of the SNL reviewing season, where we can begin the painstaking process of examining and discussing every minute detail about the show that takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin', Saturday Night Live. Oh, the minutiae! As you can also tell, my safety-blanket warning last spring that I might not be back to review episodes this season turned out to be much ado about nothing. My concerns about my school schedule turned out to be for naught, since my classload on Mondays and Tuesdays is quite light. The only possible problems could stem from both my job and my new position as a staff writer for the UWO school paper, but I don't anticipate anything coming up major enough for me to miss out on reviewing. The only effect could be that my pre-show preamble may be a little shorter. So, all of my fans that were worried about having to fill the SNL review void with, I dunno, Stooge, can rest easy. (I'm just kidding Stooge! It's all in good fun! I love you man!)
