Extractions: The following was received from Mark in March 1998. Just before my first visit there the club members had been split almost halfway as to whether they should allow a former Italian porn star who was in fact quite a strong blitz player to join the club. Despite her indubitable charm and good looks she was denied membership by the thinnest of margins though I saw her once or twice afterwards as a patron of the cafe. My sister returned to Salzburg for several successive summers and I tagged along playing blitz till I could drop. The hours I spent there were some of the best I have ever spent in a chess club and at a time when I was rapidly improving, playing strong opposition on a daily basis and earning a little pocket money did my chess a world of good. Sadly now the club has moved premises due to the cafe being turned into some American clothes shop. Though the club still exists the atmosphere and grandeur of Cafe Mozart in it's heyday is something that will not be possible to recreate. Back in Dublin, I joined a local chess club which met once a week for a few hours and whose membership was twenty pence to be presented on a weekly basis. Though this club was indeed a fabulous club from which many strong players progressed, the highlight in the view of the members was always the game of chasing in and out of a cluster of trees in the school grounds afterwards. Strangely my most enduring memory of the time there was the manner in which I tried to get the attention of a girl I had a crush on by wearing luminous snot-green socks. Any chance of romance was however scuppered when during a chess encounter I took the somewhat questionable decision of trying to impress her by catching her in a family fork in front of numerous onlookers. Had I had the foresight to blunder horribly, perhaps I would have found a beautiful mate, yet at the age of seven I lacked such worldly knowledge and some might argue still do!

TBH, Sasha Smith listens mostly to jazz, especially Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubicaba at Route 44 Studios,Uncle mark Chait, Pete Ben and Regina Apostoli, Jerry myers, everyone at http://www.thebluehighway.com/sasha.html
Extractions: by Alan J. Balfour S asha Smith has been attracting a growing legion of fans in Sonoma County and the Bay Area since his amazing solo performance at the 1993 Sonoma County Blues Festival at the tender age of 12. Since that time, Sasha has grown up fast, and the novelty of his youth has played a decreasingly less important part in our perception of him. I recently spent some time with Sasha and his father, Claude Smith, to learn more about him and his music and came away most impressed. Sasha and his music reflect each other, and he exhibits the same maturity in conversation as he does with his music. I believe I heard nary a "ya know," a "like" or a "huh" the entire evening. A s might be expected, Sasha is from a musical and artistic family and has been exposed to a vast array of styles and forms. Sandy Smith his mother, is a school teacher, classical musician, dancer and choreographer and has played viola in local string quartets. Dad is a painter and jazz and blues bassist. His parents are separated, and Sasha believes the pain their separation has caused him comes through in his music. S asha's musical training began with the violin when he was 3 or 4. He studied classical violin until he was 8 when he discovered piano and began classical lessons which lasted about five years. At the same time, he was introduced to blues and jazz by his father and fell in love with the freedom offered by their improvisational nature. Sasha credits classical training with teaching him musical theory, keyboard technique and how to listen. Thus, by the time he wanted to play blues, he didn't have to learn how to play piano, but rather, could concentrate on learning the music itself.

Mark Hummel - "Heart Of Chicago" and bassist Bob Stroger combine with pianist Barrelhouse Chuck and guitarists BillyFlynn, Dave myers (the last a rock-solid foundation for marks singing http://www.tonecool.com/cds/1158.htm
Extractions: (TC 1158) As a torch bearer for West Coast Blues, Mark Hummel has established himself as one of the finest and most respected harmonica players in the country. For his new album, Mark went straight to the Heart of Chicago to pay tribute to his roots and record an album of straight-ahead Chicago blues. Mark called on long time friends from the Windy City to assemble an all-star cast of Chicago Blues veterans. Former Muddy Waters sidemen - drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and bassist Bob Stroger - combine with pianist Barrelhouse Chuck, and guitarists Billy Flynn, Dave Myers (the last surviving member of Little Walters Band), and producer/guitarist Steve Freund to create a rock-solid foundation for Marks singing and harp playing. Heart of Chicago draws its influences from the blues of Chicago, but it creates a new sound with the additional element of Marks West Coast blues. "My Kind of Baby" and the instrumental "Rockin at the Riverside", recall Little Walters best numbers with a rocking, darting amplified harmonica solo played over Billy Flynns and Dave Myers intricate guitar backing. The harmonica and guitar interplay on "Rollin From Side to Side" captures the classic sound of Muddy Waters numbers with Little Walter and James Cotton. Billy Flynns biting slide guitar over Barrelhouse Chucks rollicking piano fills - recalling Sunnyland Slims signature sound - and the lazy rhythmic groove laid down by Muddys former rhythm section, creates the perfect showcase for Marks tasteful vocals and deep harmonica sound.

Extractions: Balance and Swing , comprised of Susan and John Reading and Tina Gugeler have been providing high energy music for the Front Range contra dance scene since 1993. All three were part of the founding members of ContraFusion. From there, they formed the trio to ease rehearsal scheduling and to lower costs allowing them to land more paying gigs. The group proved to be very popular and in 1995 became the regular band for the monthly Zesty Contra dances. BAS has performed at a variety of festivals and dance camps and each individual can be found lurking in other constellations of bands throughout the region. Sue learned to play fiddle in New England in the early 70s. She had contact with some of the finest fiddlers in that region and has played consistently with contra dance bands and traditional musicians since then. She relocated to Colorado in 1991 with John and became involved in the traditional music community. Sue has a large repertoire and enjoys playing anywhere, anytime. Tina , originally from Louisiana, made her way to the Denver area after taking the long way around through Ketchikan, Alaska. Tina started her hammered dulcimer career in Ketchikan in 1986 playing for local contra dances. In 1992 Tina won the Colorado State Hammered Dulcimer Championship and in 2000 went on to win the National Hammered Dulcimer Championship in Winfield, Kansas. In addition to her work with BAS, she does solo performances and teaches.
