Mostly Mozart Festival conductor Joseph Swensen directing a program of two great Classical works Beethoven's1st Symphony and Mozart's 23rd Concerto featuring pianist ivan moravec. http://judykapner.com/mostlymozart/week2.htm
Extractions: If you enjoy discovering the up-and-coming stars of classical music, this is your week at Mostly Mozart. Start with a Festival debut by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge as they take you through a century of grand choral masterworks, from Bach to Mozart to Brahms. Or see British sensation Harry Bicket whose conducting has been praised for its "passionate, intelligent enthusiasm" (The Scotsman). His Mostly Mozart debut will include works featuring two soloist debuts: cellist plays Haydn and pianist Orli Shaham performs Mendelssohn with her celebrated brother Gil. You can also hear bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff , who made a legendary Mostly Mozart debut last season. Following a 2000 Grammy Award for his Mahler CD, Quasthoff's Thursday night recital of Schumann, Mahler, and Mozart promises similar rewards. The week's final debut is rising conductor Joseph Swensen directing a program of two great Classical works: Beethoven's 1st Symphony and Mozart's 23rd Concerto featuring pianist Ivan Moravec

Still, their result is an appealing hybrid of styles that has its own moments of greatness. Carbon Leaf, a Celtic-influenced roots-rock band from Virginia, opens. Brandyhouse (Hutchinson/Sarig) JUNIOR BROWN The deep-voiced Brown long has been a critical favorite for his honest, Ernest Tubb-style western swing imbued with rockabilly, surf, jazz and even Hawaiian sounds. With the new Mixed Bag , his trademark guit-steel (the Frankenstein instrument he invented) gets a workout on tunes like "Catfish and Collard Greens," the spy-fantasy "Cagey Bea" and a rollicking cover of "Guitar Man." Opening, Squirrel Nut Zippers headman James Mathus brings his more blues-and-boogie-oriented side project, the Knockdown Society. Their second album, National Antiseptic , came out last month.
Art Of Cluadio Arrau A much likelier candidate for elderstatesman status is ivan moravec. He is aCzech pianist, now in his fifties, who made a notable series of Chopin and http://www.princeton.edu/~gpmenos/art_of_C_Arrau.html
Extractions: At eighty, the brilliant pianist Claudio Arrau plays passionately on, but successors in the Romantic tradition are hard to find. But Arrau goes on, playing better than ever. His tempos have slowed down over the years - there are drastic differences between his performances of any piece he has recorded more than once - but there can be no doubt that the changes result from conviction rather than physical necessity. He plays Liszt's frighteningly demanding Transcendental Etudes with commanding technique. His newest release, a Liszt potpourri (Philips 6514 273), displays Arrau's blazing emotional fervor and sincerity. It makes the most convincing case on records for Liszt as a major composer. The indispensable boxes of the Arrau Edition are the Liszt, the Schubert, and the Brahms, which is full of near-perfect performances. The more I listen, though, to the rest of the edition, the less I want to be without any of Arrau's interpretations and their sometimes quirky insights. Another major commemorative recording is Claudio Arrau: A Retrospective (CBS M3 37866), which contains performances of Liszt, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel from the late forties and early fifties. Comparing the CBS and Philips versions of Schumann's Kreisleriana shows the earlier Arrau to be a mainstream interpreter and the later Arrau to be more individual, even slightly eccentric, but tantalizing. Perhaps the real asset of the CBS box is the sample of five of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies. Both the music and the playing are far less solemn and imposing than in the Philips box; it is refreshing to hear the earlier Arrau indulge in a romp.

Extractions: Piano Sonatas: An Overview of Selected Recordings By Ron Drummond Any complete recording of a cycle as diverse as Beethoven's is going to be uneven, period. You will not find a be-all end-all. Nevertheless, I do think it's useful to have a complete recording by one artist, for the insights a single, refined sensibility can bring to Beethoven across the full range of his sonatas. But one should also consider supplementing a complete recording with additional recordings of individual sonatas by various performers. Of complete sets, I highly recommend Richard Goode on Elektra/Nonesuch. Goode has been praised in almost all quarters as perhaps the finest surveyor of Beethoven's sonatas since Schnabel. He has all the chops and a wealth of feeling and insight to convey. The recording is state of the art. Though superb throughout, Goode is at his best in Sonatas 12-18. Another cycle which alas is not yet complete is Jean Bernard Pommier's on Erato. Three multi-disc volumes (of an eventual four) have been released so far, and I for one am eager to have that last volume! Where Goode takes a Romantic approach to Beethoven, Pommier achieves an almost ideally Classical equipoise. He is fleet, sensitive, flexible, and very expressive. The recorded sound is among the best I've heard in piano recordings. Pommier is at his best in the first ten sonatas (works which I have a particular fondness for), but the later works are wonderful as well. As for supplemental recordings:

Extractions: This is was the first Moravec recording that I purchased. I bought it despite some reservations by a friend who had heard the Vox LPs and whose opinions on music I take very seriously. He changed his tune when he heard this recording. Where should I begin? Moravec's technique is fabulous. His articulation is crisp, and his tone is gorgeous. What's more, his personality is expressed here not by showboating but by his unerring ability to bring out the characteristics of Debussy and Chopin. With Debussy, the shocking dissonances are made clear but, at the same time, are sweetened by a lucious tone and a sensitivity to Debussy's underappreciated tunefulness. In the Chopin, Moravec's precise technique is coupled with his sensitivity to rhythm so that the different types of pieces (mazurkas, waltzes, polonaises) are indeed unmistakably different, each type pleasing in very different way.
