Add to cart The period from the mid 1950's until the mid 1960's represents the heyday of mainstream modern jazz. Many of those now considered among the greatest of all time achieved their fame in this era. John Coltrane is another giant of this period. In addition to his playing with Miles, he recorded the album Giant Steps under his own name, which showed him to be one of the most technically gifted and harmonically advanced players around. After leaving Miles, he formed a quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and a variety of bass players, finally settling on Jimmy Garrison. Coltrane's playing with this group showed him to be one of the most intensely emotional players around. Tyner is also a major voice on his instrument, featuring a very percussive attack. Elvin Jones is a master of rhythmic intensity. This group evolved constantly, from the relatively traditional post bop of My Favorite Things to the high energy modal of A Love Supreme to the wailing avant garde of Meditations and Ascension. Charles Mingus was another influential leader during this period. His small groups tended to be less structured than others, giving more freedom to the individual players, although Mingus also directed larger ensembles in which most of the parts were written out. Mingus' compositions for smaller groups were often only rough sketches, and performances were sometimes literally composed or arranged on the bandstand, with Mingus calling out directions to the musicians. Alto saxophonist, bass clarinetist, and flautist Eric Dolphy was a mainstay of Mingus' groups. His playing was often described angular, meaning that the interval in his lines were often large leaps, as opposed to scalar lines, consist mostly of steps. The album Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus featuring Dolphy is a classic.

Extractions: Singer/Pianist Freddy Cole is one of the few remaining great jazz singers. While sounding a great deal like his older brother Nat "King" Cole; he has personality and style of his own. His smoky vocals tend to be a bit dark and laid-back. On his latest offering, his second on the Telarc label he sings both American Classics and Brazilian-influenced tunes. There are eleven songs on this CD "Rio de Janeiro Blue", and they range from Cole Porter's "I Concentrate on You", the all-time jazz favourite by Antonio Carlos Jobim "Sem Voce", sang in Portuguese, and a Cuban Bolero "Delirio". An excellent pianist, Cole takes great pains in selecting the material and musicians for his recordings, and on this occasion he places himself in two different settings, a septet that displays Latin American stylings and his regular band with guitarist Jerry Byrd, bassist Herman Burney and drummer Curtis Boyd. This is a well-balanced CD that has something for everyone. The Latin flavoured rhythms invites you to dance, while Cole's smooth and romantic voice invokes serene and pleasant thoughts. I love the treatment given to Cole Porter's "I Concentrate on You". The crisp, hard tenor sax playing of Eric Alexander makes it the blowing track of the session. This is augmented by Cole's stop-time interlude and rich altered harmonies. On "Yellow Days", Cole finds himself in the company of such greats as Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and Duke Ellington, who have all recorded versions of this tune. A self-described storyteller, Cole's performance throughout this recording is delivered with emotion, passion and clarity. His piano playing, arranging skills and versatility have stood the test of time. As he approaches his seventieth birthday, he is singing better than ever and hopefully will do so for a long time to come. CS

Extractions: Theory and Methodology by Mark C. Gridley Spring, 1990 Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio Miles Davis The variety of jazz styles that emerged during the 1950s was followed by very little agreement about how to describe them. Moreover, there is only limited consistency in how journalists and historians apply labels when they discuss jazz styles of that period. Here, Mark Gridley, discusses the uses of the labels of "Cool Jazz," "West Coast" and "Hard Bop," trying to clarify several trends in the vast array of styles that were evident in modern jazz during the 1950s. Introduction . The variety of jazz styles that emerged during the 1950s was followed by very little agreement about how to describe them. For instance, Harvey Pekar (1964) has written about critics who "... consistently put down a New York City-centered jazz movement indiscriminately tagged 'hard bop,' or 'neo-bop' or 'post-bop.' They seemed to think that the music was nothing more than an imitation of bop plus the inconsequential addition of an earthy quality called funk, which was derived from Gospel and blues sources." On the contrary, he says, "During the 1950s there came to the fore many talented musicians whose point of departure was bop but whose object was to extend its limits and to conceive their own styles rather than to copy Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie." After that introduction, Pekar discussed the 1950s work of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Gigi Gryce, Benny Golson, Clifford Brown, Thad Jones, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Art Blakey and others.

Extractions: After his Berklee experience Joe began making a living as a working musician - something hes done now for over 20 years. He free-lanced on upright bass in and around the Boston area. Hes also spent significant time on guitar as a sideman backing great artists like Buddy DeFranco, Artie Shaw and Al Grey. Joe spent six years and played all across the country with Arties band and has been with trombonist Al Grey (a veteran of the Count Basie Orchestra and Frank Sinatras band) for about 10 years. Two Funky People (the title refers to the fact that there are two guitarists on this date and is also a direct reference to their famous fathers) is funky in a refreshingly relaxed way. Unquestionably theres strong energy and drive in both Joes and Dougs playing but nothing is overdone or frantic. I especially enjoy the teamwork and interplay in this quartet - both between Joe and Doug as well as the rock solid rhythm section of Dennis Irwin (bass) and Barry Ries (drums).
