Extractions: Having been less than kind to a similar Brilliant Classics reissue of the Saint-Saens concertos in these columns, I am pleased to report a much more positive state of affairs here. For a start, you get all you need on two well-filled discs at super-budget price, and although the packaging again doesnt include any sort of information or booklet, the performances are all digital and of pretty recent provenance. In fact, I would say at the outset that the only real problem for this set will be the vast amount of competition, some of it just as cheap. Let me declare my overall favourite straightaway, John Lills highly poetic and intelligent account of the youthful Concerto No.1, which in his capable hands emerges as far more than a Tchaikovskian war-horse. The bravura is all there, but is balanced against the darker, more introspective moments for which Rachmaninov is justly famous. Try the finale, which is always tricky to bring off, its barnstorming opening giving way to a typically lush but slightly melancholy big tune (around 2"15 in on this recording); Otaka and the BBC NOW lend sensitive support to Lills handling of this glorious episode, and although one critic on its first release were worried that the pianist sounded "too hard and Lisztian (!) ", I have no problem at all with this performance.

There I noted his immense technical fluency and innate musical quality while finding some of his playing oddly detached. The same qualities emerge in these fleet, exceptionally well-mannered performances of the Third and Fourth Concertos, set within Ivan Shpillers polite, even anodyne, partnership (try the one moment of orchestral glory, the introduction to the Third Concertos central Intermezzo) and Vanguard Classics gentle, soft-focus sound. Such an approach may be temporarily fashionable (recent discs by Andsnes and Thibaudet come to mind) but Rachmaninovs regenerative glamour and urgency surely require at least as much recognition as his inherently aristocratic nature.

Also, while finding the sound in the last 2 discs (from the 60s and 90s) enjoyable, he's not happy with the sound on the mono transfers in the first 3 discs. Paul Goldstein counters that pitch stability is important to him and that this is good on all of these and that he hears a "basically musical sound throughout" in contrast to the "muffled, denatured" results from, as an example, EMI's Schnabel Beethoven sonatas. He recommends this set as a very inexpensive way to hear "some of the most famous old piano recordings."

Quiz Vladimir Ashkenazy is angry. The object of his vitriol is a review in a Berlin newspaper following a performance of Sergei Rachmaninov's Third Symphony. "The headline was: Dr Zhivago's Music. Just like that, dismissing it like film music. I thought, 'You miserable idiots! There is so much in this symphony - can you not hear it?' I think it's unbelievably arrogant, so small-minded." The anecdote illustrates the unusual stigma that has beset the music of Rachmaninov for decades. While some composers suffer from being unjustly neglected, Rachmaninov's problem is quite the opposite.
