Extractions: The 18th Variation of Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini is so well known that it tends to distract the listener from the fact that the work is really a concerto which uses the wonderfully-inventive theme of the last of Paganini's Twenty-four caprices for violin as its starting point. Extractions: Back Issues In January 2001, Russian Life magazine inaugurated an ongoing series of articles on 100 Young Russians to Watch in the coming century. The intent was to focus on hope, not hype, on promise, not profligate corruption. There are plenty of places to read stories about what is "wrong" in Russia today. But very few places to read about the things that are going right, the people who are trying to make a difference. We do not undertake this huge effort alone. Together with the not-for-profit Russian Arts Foundation, and in consultation with numerous Russian and international experts and public figures, we are seeking out uniquely talented Russians we feel our readers should know more about. We do not pretend to any kind of omniscience of finality. By no means do we feel that these are the "only" 100 young Russians to watch, or, by some metaphysical yardstick, the top 100 individuals in Russia. Instead, we present 100 very interesting, very exceptional individuals. By themselves, they are individuals who will surely make a different in the future of Russia. But they are also representatives of the millions of young Russians who must inherit Russia's past and invent its future. To be selected as one of our 100 Young Russians, individuals must meet the following criteria: the individual is a citizen of Russia; the individual has made a significant, positive contribution to his or her sphere of activity and shows particular promise for a lifetime of achievement; the individual's achievement and promise is recognized by Russian and/or international observers.

His view of these 'collected miniatures as large scale work' is at once sure and convincing, and founded upon a marvellous technique. It is of course a tribute to Chopin that the most formidable technical challenge is never less than musical, so that at this level of performance the emotional interpretative insights begin to come flooding in. There is no lack of intense rhetoric, of dazzling virtuosity, but it is always in the service of structural command. Lugansky is helped by a recording which successfully combines clarity, atmosphere and impact; and as such the great C minor Nocturne, Opus 48 No. 1, makes a particularly potent effect. The two Ballades likewise have abundant subtleties, and a real sweep of momentum, such is the urgent communication involved. There are other ways of playing this music, no doubt, and they would generally be more relaxed (Artur Rubinstein comes to mind), but Lugansky has a great deal to offer.
