Extractions: The Alfred and Joseph Leonard Special Needs Music Fund The Alfred and Joseph Leonard Special Needs Music Fund was established in 1990 to honor Alfred Leonard and his brother Joseph, who was blind. From the late 1940s to the early 1960s, Alfred was known as the voice of classical music in Los Angeles on the radio station KFAC, with programs such as Evenings on the Roof Chamber Music Series. Joseph Leonard was an accomplished pianist and organist, who taught and affected a wide radio audience. The Leonard Fund provides tuition assistance to physically and mentally challenged individuals, allowing them the opportunity to study at the Longy School of Music. "Longy arranged for me to live close by and provides an assistant who (among other things) transcribes my Braille compositions onto music paper as a score. There is a computer that transcribes without the intervention of an assistant and I hope someday to have use of this technology." - Caglar Arsu The Funds first scholarship was awarded to Cydnie Breazeale-Davis in 1990. Overcoming blindness and hearing-impairment, she began taking lessons and classes at Longy at age 14, graduated from Berklee College of Music and currently heads her own jazz ensemble. This years recipient of the scholarship is Caglar Arsu, a candidate for an undergraduate Diploma in Composition. While in Istanbul, shortly after his first experience on stage as a pianist at the age of 18, he lost his vision. He subsequently learned Braille, attended Boston University, studied English and shared musical ideas with fellow musicians at BU until he received an advanced level certificate in December 2000. At Longy he has been busy composing, working with composition faculty members Eric Sawyer and Paul W. Brust, taking diverse classes and using a special computer for musical notation.

At that time Faubion had just completed his magnum opus, Scriabin, the first edition of which was published by Kodansha International. (Thanks to the efforts of Edith Finton Rieber and the Scriabin Society of America, it has been re-printed in a completely revised edition by Dover Press.) At that time I was still a student at the Juilliard School and playing quite a lot with pianist Garrick Ohlsson. I remember one evening Faubion telling me he had a gift for me. It was the music for the only original cello work by Scriabin, the early Romance (for horn or cello) . The first time I played it was with Garrick, and I still remember the excitement and sense of wonder at that experience. Since then I have played the Romance many times with different pianists, and it never ceases to amaze me, always retaining its freshness - indeed the 'romance' of youth. Recently I came upon an old 78 rpm disc of the Romance

Extractions: Joseph R. Noga FD. original founder of Noga Funeral Home, was born in Warsaw, Poland where he taught six languages in a Franciscan Monastery. Joseph was an accomplished concert pianist, graduating from the Conservatory of Music in Warsaw. At the turn of the 20th century, Joseph moved to the United States from Poland, working as a piano tuner. It is through his musical talents that Joseph became interested in becoming a funeral director. One of his clients, Rusiewicz Funeral Home, needed part-time help and Joseph found that he enjoyed the work and acted as a translator to many of the funeral home's European clients. In 1920, Joseph decided to venture out on his own when he purchased a house in New Castle and transformed it into a working funeral home. Noga Funeral Home was founded at its original location on Long Avenue where its business flourished. In 1939, Joseph was joined at the funeral home by his son's, John J. Noga FD. and Frank Edward Noga FD. Joseph, John and Frank, decided that the business was outgrowing the Long Avenue facility, and purchased a home at the current location of Noga Funeral Home on South Mill Street. Joseph and John remodeled and expanded the home in 1946 and '47, opening the doors to the new facility early in 1948. The family tradition has continued at Noga Funeral Home. John's son, J Russell Noga FD had two sons, Joseph M Noga FD. who is now an doctor, and Russell S Noga FD. (Rusty) who is his current partner. They are third and fourth generation funeral directors and now own and operate Noga Funeral Home. John is still active in the daily business and still enjoys greeting families after 62 years of service. Noga Funeral Home has maintained its rich tradition of serving families in their time of need.

The toccata, in particular, resembles the style of the rock organist Keith Emerson, which is not surprising when one remembers that Bonelli has also served his time as a pop musician. The exuberantly cheeky toccata by Messiaen student Jean Guillou (born 1930) followed on seamlessly, with its choppy rhythms and chromatic movements. Extractions: Music Minus One (MMO) recorded tapes have been around for a long time, proving to be of great value to students and teachers as well as seasoned performers in the preparation of performances. They were designed to give the solo instrumentalist the opportunity to play along with a pre-recorded piano, orchestral or ensemble accompaniment. Many of these analog tapes have now been digitally re-mastered to compact discs, a format that is immensely practical from a technical as well as musical viewpoint. An ever-present problem for string players during the learning period is the absence of a good piano accompanist. Many long hours are necessarily spent in the study process, however it ultimately becomes imperative to play together in order to understand the complete score. As soon as the student can play with technical fluency, secure rhythm and a firmly projected tone, the duo process can begin. Music Minus One fills the gap admirably. It does more. Where can one have such a permanent resource as the beautiful and sensitive accompaniments of one of the great pianists, Joseph Seiger? No need to travel across town, hire a studio, pay expensive accompaniment fees, when at the touch of a button, Mr. Seiger will play the piece of your choice.

Extractions: Good Afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen, Let us start from the beginning though, and find exactly why we are hear to celebrate Wanda Wilk's birthday, and why we should be proud and honored to do so. Wanda Harasimowicz was born in 1921 in Hamtramck, Michigan of Polish parents. She graduated from Wayne University in Detroit with a Bachelor of Music degree, from which we can infer that her love of music had been with her since she was a young woman. She taught for 5 ½ years in public schools in Detroit. It takes a great deal of time and effort to be a teacher, to be a mentor for young minds, and shape them for the future. She enrolled in a masters degree program at the University of Southern California, but interrupted her studies to become a critic teacher at Emerson Junior High School in conjunction with the UCLA teacher's education program. During this time she performed many charity functions as a pianist. As a Polish-American, I can tell you, Aunt Wanda, that I for one am truly grateful that such a place exists for people to research and know of Poland's great musicians and music. Before this institution, many Americans and people living in other English speaking countries were in the dark about Poland's musical accomplishments. Due to this center, the music and musicians of Poland will now not be overlooked with other European composers and music. I, myself, am grateful Aunt Wanda, and your work is worth it. The younger generation of people around the world will make great use of it, and your name will forever exist as long as music does. Wanda Wilk also helps publish a monthly newsletter on the USC Polish music website, and there is information there about Polish musicians, scholars, journalists, and concerts, everything a Polish Music Lover needs.
