Iwan Llewelyn Jones not just a delicate plant was a point never far away from this imaginatively plannedWigmore Hall recital by the young Welsh pianist, iwan llewelynjones. http://www.iwanpiano.com/reviews.html
Extractions: Reviews Geoffrey Norris, Daily Telegraph, July 1987 In his London debut recital at the Wigmore Hall on Tuesday night, Iwan Llewelyn-Jones revealed a lively, imaginative, artistic temperament which lent itself naturally to the Romantic repertory. Aside from a Mozart sonata, his programme was drawn from the period spanning Chopin and Ravel, with Scriabin and Franck in between (and with Debussy's "La fille aux cheveux de lin" played as an encore, in a thoroughly captivating way that touched in the music's sense of wistful languor and caught its quiet, unassuming expressiveness ideally). On this evidence, Mr Llewelyn-Jones is a pianist who gives great thought to his interpretations, He is able to take his technique for granted (or so it seems), and he builds from this firm basis readings of wide and sensitive scope which never lose sight of the particular idiom of the music or seek to impose on it anything extraneous. Thus, his playing of Ravel's "Le tombeau de Couperin" had a crystal clarity, a classical simplicity in which each note was carefully articulated and found its place in a well-reasoned, nicely shaped and characterful performance. In Franck's "Chorale, Prelude and Fugue", too, his playing had breadth and power and succeeded in bringing to the contrapuntal arguments (which can often sound routine) a flair and a sense of instinctively realised keyboard colour which reinforced both the music's strength and its detailed effect.

This was the first CD recording on a Stuart outside Australia. Welsh College of Music and Drama bought the piano back in May this year following a visit to Australia by the college's Chairman of Governors, Sir David Rowe-Beddoe. It was the first export sale of a Stuart and Sons piano, and the College was able to secure support for its purchase from the Government of New South Wales. Iwan Llewelyn-Jones is a professional pianist and studied at Balliol College, Oxford and the Royal College of Music where he won the Chopin Prize, the Hopkinson Gold Medal, and the Instrumental Duo Prize. Success followed in many major international competitions in Britain, France, Italy and Spain, whilst continuing his studies with Noretta Conci and Cécile Ousset.

Extractions: CHAMBER ORCHESTRA THE UNIVERSITY SINFONIA The Sinfonia is the premier amateur chamber orchestra in West and Central Wales. Its smaller size means that it can concentrate on a quite different repertoire from the symphony orchestra, playing works from the Classical and Baroque periods as well as later music. The orchestra enjoys playing the repertoire as well as preparing for concerts. There are usually three or four of these each year. As well as performances in Aberystwyth , the Sinfonia goes 'on tour' to other towns and has, in recent years, been a regular visitor to Gregynog Hall, the University's beautifully situated country house study and conference centre. The group is friendly and committed. Soloists for concertos are usually drawn from the orchestra - and there are also plenty of opportunities to play through solo works in rehearsals. Among the distinguished guest artists who have performed with Sinfonia include pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones and the brilliant rising star tenor, Gwyn Hughes Jones, who sang a new work, Caer Arianrhod , commissioned from composer Geraint Lewis.

Extractions: From the bustling streets of 1880's Montmartre, where artists, musicians and writers rubbed shoulders with the bourgeoisie of Paris and where Emmanuel Chabrier wrote his Bourrée Fantasque in 1891, this collection of French musical 'Portraits' takes the listener on a journey spanning some sixty years arriving eventually at 1944, the year in which Messiaen composed his masterpiece Le Baiser de l'Enfant-Jésus Just imagine the witty, articulate Chabrier seated at his piano (above which hung the painting 'Un bar aux Folies-Bergère' by his life long friend, Edouard Manet) exploring a new sound world of vivid colours and textures in his music. Poulenc wrote of Chabrier's music, "A harmonic universe opened up before me and my music never forgot that first kiss of love." In the dazzling Caprice Italien of 1925, Poulenc demonstrates this with fresh, vibrant, 'jazzy' harmonies and broad expansive melodies.

Extractions: 1948 - A TIME CAPSULE A greater contrast between sonatas would be hard to find in any fragment of time, but it seems amazing to me that Nikolay Myaskovsky, Elliott Carter and Francis Poulenc should all have written cello sonatas in the same year, 1948. These three major composers, at very different stages in their lives and careers, with vastly different cultural and political backgrounds, chose the sonata as their framework with dramatically different results. I think of these works as three conversational types. Myaskovsky's conversation is a formal, polite, refined and serious dialogue, each partner having his turn to speak. Poulenc's duettists however keep up a constant, witty banter. They never stop chatting, very fast, very fluent, and yet managing never to talk at the same time! The 'chat' is conducted largely over coffee and Pernod at a boulevard café in the heart of Paris, with city life hustling and bustling about them. Carter's two players bring a whole new concept to the art of conversation. They appear to follow quite independent thoughts and discussions, maintaining parallel conversations, cheerfully oblivious of one another at times but also astonishingly in tune with each other's wavelength.

Excellent performances of little-known works that make for rewarding listening. INVOCATION - SCOTT MORRIS EROICA JDT3030. On Invocation, the gifted young California-based guitarist Scott Morris plays a well-chosen collection of guitar pieces spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. There are works by Fernando Sor, Manuel de Falla (Homenaje), Joaquin Rodrigo (Invocation dy Danza), Niccolo Paganini, Leo Brouwer (Elegio de la Danza), Andrew York and Johann Kaspar Mertz. This imaginative album was produced by John Dearman of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and is a delightful selection of music that deserves to be better known. J S AND C P E BACH - MUSIC FOR OBOE The internationally renowned oboist Paulo Pollastri, together with harpsichord player Giovanna Losco (both were born in Bologna), performs three sonatas by Bach that are better known in their original flute versions. The magisterial Sonata in G minor, which Bach may at first have been intended for the oboe, is particularly well suited to the instrument. This excellent CD also includes J S Bachs Partita in G minor for Solo Oboe and the delightful Sonata in G minor by his son, Carl Philip Emanuel Bach.
