Extractions: SHANGHAI, CHINA Basketball and cartoon drawing were 10th-grader Hui Yunhu's main hobbies when he lived in a small Shanghai flat. But five years ago, the Hui family moved in with the maternal grandparents. That meant extra space - and room for a used Chinese-made upright piano. Now, each evening, Yunhu spends an hour at what has become in recent years a national passion. This band was made fore you and me Known here as "the queen of instruments," the piano's new popularity in China is a story, in part, of an emerging middle class. Just as American couples in the '50s and '60s dragged their "boomer" progeny to piano lessons, Chinese parents in the budding suburbs of China prod their offspring to tickle the ivories and tackle Chopin. For many Chinese, what was a luxury is now a possibility. With more disposable income, more living space for 300 to 400 million Chinese starting to don white collars, and with new rhetoric in the air about the virtues and paybacks of learning an instrument - sales of pianos, piano music, and piano lessons are rising.

By the end of the Jan. 21 evening, Lee, 46, had picked up the best-director trophy for his soulful martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The movie also took the best foreign-language film award. "I cannot tell you how surprised I am," said Lee, before thanking the cast and crew for enduring his film-inspired neuroticism. "I spent a whole year in China trying to find my roots and dealing with my childhood fantasy and midlife crisis." The director also thanked his wife, doctor Jane Lin , whom he acknowledged as the role model for Crouching Tiger's strong female characters. "Except, of course, for Jade Fox," Lee added smartly, referring to the movie's villain. Let's hope he gets the chance to think just as quickly when the Oscars roll around in March.

Extractions: JOB OFFERS October 29, 2000 No. 44 (627) [an error occurred while processing this directive] CHOPIN COMPETITION We Have a Winner This year saw the 14th edition of the competition, held Oct. 4-22. "I am very pleased with this year's competition, above all because we were able to award a first prize, which hadn't been possible at the last two competitions," said Prof. Andrzej Jasiñski, chairman of the panel of judges. "A third such occurrence would bode very ill for the entire event." The competition's gala concert at the National Philharmonic Oct. 20 also wrapped up the celebrations of the Year of Chopin, which was announced by UNESCO in 1999 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the composer's death. This year's competition included 94 pianists from 25 countries. In the first stage, after the etudes and nocturnes, the artists were challenged with greater forms such as a ballade or the Fantaisie in F Minor. This year, 38 participants advanced to stage two, despite regulations which allow only 36-this irregularity shows the very high level of the competitors at this year's competition. In the second stage, candidates chose one of the polonaises, scherzos and waltzes, as well as additional pieces such as preludes, impromptus or rondos. In the third stage they were tested on very difficult interpretations of a mazurka and one of two sonatas (B Flat Minor Op. 35 or B Minor Op. 58). Finally, in the last stage, six pianists presented a Chopin concerto of their choice.

Extractions: Having a chance to meet the local young fellows, Yundi was excited and generous in giving his heartfelt advice. "Through participating in competitions, kids get more chances to practice. There may be uneasy moments with lots of pressure, but they could push themselves to improve and become more experienced," he said. Yundi began with accordion and turned playing the piano at the age of seven. So far, he has participated in three international competitions. As he said, "Taking good rest is important. I would play table tennis to relax myself. That's entertaining!" The making of the debut album, which has already achieved a golden sale, is surely a new experience to the experienced Yundi. "Playing in live is very different from playing in the studio. I was so sensitive to the microphone and it took me a few days to go with it," he revealed. On the prestigious Steinway's Tricentennial grand piano, the limited edition to celebrate the instrument's 300th anniversary, the newborn star's performance of Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 delighted everyone in the showroom.

Extractions: Yundi Li believes a good performer needs a wide variety of experiences. For many great achievers, victory is not just a goal in itself, but the beginning of further striving. That's certainly true in the case of Yundi Li, who won the 14th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in October 2000. Despite climbing to the very top of his profession, the 20-year-old says he still has many aspects of life to explore. ``Music is a part of my life. But good music-making is not possible without varied life experiences and broad knowledge,'' Li said through an interpreter in an interview while he was in Tokyo to promote ``La Campenella,'' an album of works by Franz Liszt released here in January by Universal Music. At age 18, Li became the youngest pianist ever to be awarded the top prize in the prestigious competition, whose past winners include Martha Argerich and Maurizio Pollini. As the judges don't award a first prize if they believe no contestant merits it, Li also became the first person to win the top award in 15 years, following Russian-born Stanislav Bunin in 1985. Furthermore, he was the first Chinese to receive the highest honor in the entire history of the contest, which has usually been held every five years since 1927.
