Extractions: The piano rose to prominence simultaneously with the Romantic movement at the beginning of the 19th century. It quickly came to represent everything that Romanticism stood for notably greater feeling at all costs. But Romanticism also aspired to touch realms never previously reached. The result was music that was so emotional it moved its original hearers to tears, and titanic works that appeared to be heading where no music had gone before, culminating in Wagner's mature operas. Nothing like it had ever been heard, or indeed thought possible. Because the piano was central to this ambitious new music, the pianist became a kind of messenger from the gods. He was seen as someone whose feelings were so powerful that the only way he could express them was on this novel instrument with such a remarkable dynamic range.

Extractions: Home Letters to Editor Domestic World ... Chinese Piano in Tune with Chinese Style The piano, which was still a novelty to most Chinese people half a century ago, has struck a chord with millions of families and become a new fashion symbol much sought after by both young and old. "You can always hear splendid music in China as long as you open your ears," said French maestro Michel Bourdoncle, "Even some young children can play the piano well." Indeed, music is frequently heard in China, from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and further on to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The popularity of the piano, whose presence in China goes back just 80 years, was first triggered by the enthusiasm of Chinese parents in encouraging their children to have a pastime in the 1980s. They spent heavily in those years, when a piano cost years of the average salary. But those pioneering parents helped nurture a large pool of musical talent, among whom was China's first international gold medallist Li Yundi. Li was only 18 when he won the gold medal at the 14th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition in 2000, the first Chinese national to have that honor, but by no means the only one.

Chan estimates that "Art of War," to be filmed in Mandarin, will cost HK$546 million-HK$624 million ($70 million-$80 million). First on the slate will be "Operation Condor 3," details of which are being kept under wraps. The film is expected to go into production on location in India next year with a budget of at least HK$300 million ($38.5 million), the company said. "Art of War," based on the famous military treatise, will follow. Chinese warrior Sun Tzu's aphoristic essays, written more than 2,000 years ago, attempt to formulate a rational basis for the planning and conduct of military operations. The book is still in print and often used as a guide to business dealings. Chan, speaking at a celebratory dinner Friday for his latest Hong Kong release, Golden Harvest's "The Accidental Spy," said he expects to use "1 (million)-2 million" extras for the war scenes in "Art of War."

Extractions: Poland's mild-mannered Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek has been called on to mediate in a leadership crisis into which the governing Solidarity bloc (AWS) was plunged following its leader's poor showing in October's presidential elections. Post-communist incumbent Aleksander Kwasniewski won a first-round victory with 54% of the votes, with AWS leader Marian Krzaklewski coming a poor third (15.5%). Three of the four political parties comprising the AWS called for Krzaklewski's resignation. Initially, he was reluctant to step down, arguing that infighting would only hurt the AWS's chances in next year's parliamentary elections which the post-communist Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) are expected to win.
