Extractions: It has been two years since Yundi Li captured 1st prize at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. He broke the silence in the year 2000, as before then, the 1st prize had not been awarded for two consecutive competitions over a period of 15 years after Stanislov Bunin won first prize in 1985. The question is whether Yundi will indeed join the array of past competition winners who rule the musical world today, or will he be forgotten like Bunin or Dang Thai-Son. In the 2001 recording, Yundi was completely a modern pianist. Yet, in the 2002 recording, there are clear hints of Romantic pianism. He plays the Chopin Waltz and Nocturne very much in the same tradition as that of Ignaz Friedman, with extrememly detailed phrasing and much more rubato than he used to use. He has recorded Chopins Mazurka No. 22 and 23 in one take. The pause between the two Mazurkas were rather long, but during the silence the atmosphere transcends from a tranquil, melancholy, and sleepy mood into a more excited and passionate dance. In the Mazurkas Yundi has truly captured the spirit of the Polish dance, and he plays them in a charming old-school manner.

Extractions: Yundi Li- what can I say about him? There isn't much I can say, except to praise him for the music he has played for us, and to praise God, for the tremendous gift with which He has blessed Yundi, that he may share it with us, in awe of God's generous beauty, that even those who do not know Him may experience and enjoy this beauty. After the competition, Li annouced that he wished to be "the next Zimerman," and requested to study with Krystian Zimerman. Zimerman rejected the request, claiming that there was nothing he could teach Li! Sure there is criticism against the commercial image that Deutsche Grammophon has imposed on Li, or how people in Taiwan and Hong Kong have tried to sell him like a pop star, or even how he is popular among young girls in Asia! However, such things have nothing to do with his music or his personality. It would be foolish for anyone to dismiss his music for these reasons. Li's musicality is that of a phenomenon. His music is full of little nuances. Unexpected melodic lines and colours show up here and there. He plays with very slight rubato. Yet, he frees his tempo at the most appropriate places. Every note is struck with great precision. His emotions are well controlled like Zimerman, but he knows when to let his passions flow, and when he does, he conquers the audience. His touch is clean like Pollini, but unlike Pollini, he is warm. A singing tone is the gift to his fingers, and his touch is full of humanity. He carries out each phrase and melodic line with a unique and yet appropriate colour. It is amazing that a 19-year-old boy can play Chopin with such mature musicality.

The contest, the most prestigious piano contest in the world which has been held every five years since 1927, has decided the fate of many piano masters. Among former first prize winners, Maurizio Pollini is now enjoying world respect and Krystian Zimerman has become the embodiment of Chopin in the 20th century. "Pollini won the contest at 18 - I would like to be another Maurizio Pollini," Li Yundi said. Li won the competition by showing off his all-round mature playing technique and in-depth understanding of Chopin.

Extractions: Gold Medallist Pianist Gives Chopin Concert Li Yundi, the gold medal winner at the 14th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition, gave a Chopin concert in Beijing November 25 evening together with the China National Orchestra. Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing and Minister of Culture Sun Jiazheng were among the audience at the concert. Li Yundi, 18, won the gold medal in October, the first time the event's top prize has been awarded since 1985. He is the youngest in the world and the first Chinese to get the top prize. The Chopin competition, held every five years since 1927, is devoted entirely to music by the 19th-century Polish composer. The judging is so tough that in 1990 and 1995 no performances were deemed good enough for a gold medal. Li, still a student at Shenzhen Piano Art School, has won several prizes at the international level. His past honors include first place at the Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1999, and third place at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in the Netherlands.

Chinese Hear the New Year with a Mix of Music Although you can't have the old-fashioned new year's fun of listening to the rattle of firecrackers in Beijing any more because they are prohibited, you can treat your ears to a variety of new year concerts that will be happening around the city. Dozens of concerts featuring different styles will be given throughout the holiday season, making it truly a feast for local theatre-goers. On New Year's Eve, the German Radio Symphony Orchestra and Beijing Symphony Orchestra will give a joint New Year's Concert at the Great Hall of the People. This will be the fifth year that the Beijing municipal government has sponsored a concert of this kind, the first one taking place in 1997. The hope is that the concert will be of "world-class standard but with Chinese characteristics," according to one of the organizers. The programme includes both Western classical and Chinese music chosen specially for the holiday. "It is sure to be a joyful and lively performance," said Li Xi'an, former president of the China Conservatory of Music. The concert will star several widely known musicians, including the young but talented Chinese pianist Li Yundi, American violinist Sarah Chang, popular Chinese tenor Dai Yuqiang and American soprano Christina Andreou.

The 18-year-old student, who recently won a gold medal in Warsaw at the International Frederic Chopin Competition, came from humble beginnings. Born in the remote southwestern province of Sichuan to nonmusical parents, Li was 4 when he saw an accordion in a shop window in his hometown of Chongqing and begged his mother to buy it. His prized instrument in hand, Li started lessons at the Sichuan Children's Palace, a center for children's cultural activities. He switched to piano at 7.

Extractions: Local kids celebrate Mother's Day MANY of us have taken it for granted that cooking for the whole family is mom's job. We're all used to enjoying the delicacies she makes on holidays and festivals. But this past Sunday, many local kids cooked for their moms to celebrate Mother's Day. Among them was Li Yundi, the whiz-kid pianist from Shenzhen Art School. Another mom received a rose from her six-year son on Mother's Day. That morning, Ms Fang remembered, her little boy confided to her shyly, "Dear mom, today is Mother's Day, but I have no money to buy a big present for you." "It doesn't matter," Ms Fang told the boy. "I am so happy that you want to give me a present for the day." Then, while she was going out to buy breakfast for the family, she found a deep red rose fresh with dew lying on the step of her door. "Do you like it, mom?" her son said, waiting with a happy smile.

Making pose is just too much like a modeling or acting thing. In Yundi Li's case, some of his pose are really pretentious. That somehow will always discount the quality of the music produced. Posted by: AGM on January 28, 2003 02:32 PM Yundi Li is called "KIMUTAKU of Pianist" in Japan. Kimutaku is the most popular young actor in Japan. Audiences went to his concert not only to listen the music but also to see his face and pose, I think. Posted by: hirata on January 29, 2003 09:23 AM Well, in this case I guess a face can really help your career!! But don't forget plenty of good pianists out there with average look are as good as or even better than Yundi Li, yet they're not being valued and promoted the same way as good faces.... Talking about equality.....

Extractions: Los Angeles Times The last time there was a first-prize winner, Li Yundi was a toddler in central China who had never even touched a keyboard. Even now, he barely needs to shave. But he proved himself an artistic force in October when, two weeks after turning 18, Li took top honors at the 14th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, one of the world's most prestigious musical contests, held every five years.. Displaying what judges called virtuosic technique and a poetic style, Li beat out 97 participants to become the first gold medalist at the competition since 1985. In 1990 and 1995, the notoriously finicky panel of judges refused to award anyone first place, prompting criticism and bitterness in the piano-playing world. Li is also the first Chinese and one of the youngest contestants ever to claim the top prize in the competition's 73-year history. His victory, which assures Li of an entree to the world's major concert halls and recording studios, has turned the pianist into an overnight sensation in his native land, where President Jiang Zemin is known to enjoy Western classical music and a member of the Communist Politburo requested 30 tickets to a hastily organized concert by Li and the China National Symphony here in Beijing in late November.
