Quote: "I'm still not crazy about the word gay, because I think it conjures up a certain stereotypical image. I like the idea that so many younger people today are using other terms, like queer." Those with a taste for the classy flair of Cole Porter and George Gershwin can find it in the ivory-tickling music of gay pianist-singer Michael Feinstein, known for his re-energizing of standard hits from the '30s and '40s. In April Feinstein paid tribute to Academy Award-winning composer Sammy Cahn at a sold-out Carnegie Hall concert in New York City. Born in in Columbus, Ohio, Feinstein was a child prodigy, taking to the piano and show music right away. After moving with his family to Los Angeles in 1976, he met Oscar Levant's widow, who introduced him to Ira Gershwin. Hired by the famed lyricist to help organize the Gershwin archives, he continued work on the project until the composer's death.

Extractions: George Gershwin had a healthy high regard for his own music, and he loved playing it in concerts and at private parties. In one rare moment of doubt, he asked his friend Oscar Levant: "Do you think anyone will be playing my music 50 years from now?" and Levant replied: "If you're still alive, yes." Well, George died at age 38, and here we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth. He was born in Brooklyn exactly 100 years ago (well, depending when you picked up this copy of City Paper ), on Sept. 26. More people than ever are listening to his music, playing it and recording it. A batch of new CDs and historic reissues have come out to coincide with the centennial celebration. Here's a sampling of the most interesting of them. Gershwin made his reputation in the 1920s as a composer of Broadway shows, and the songs he wrote for them are his outstanding legacy. Extractions: School Links Column by Nick Clooney Visits with the Cincinnati Pops are always adventures. For instance, the ''Nights With Oscar'' concerts on March 5 and 12 took on an entirely new meaning as the story of a human Oscar nearly upstaged the famed golden statuettes. One of each evening's highlights was a film clip from ''An American in Paris'' featuring Oscar Levant. The pianist is playing Gershwin's Concerto in F and, in the scene, fantasizes that he is not only the soloist, but the conductor, the string section, the tympanist, several other orchestra members and, ultimately, the appreciative audience shouting ''Bravo!'' It is a very funny scene and we on stage were enjoying it as much as the audience. I was sitting very close to the string section and caught the eye of Don Gibson, who told me Levant had once performed that very concerto with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and had created a storm of controversy. Of course, I was intrigued and, after the concert, Don promised to bring me a part of Levant's biography dealing with the incident. The young conductor who did such a fine job leading the Cincinnati Pops through the minefield of time-critical motion picture soundtracks, John Morris Russell, was drawn into the conversation, too. He was as interested as I. And why not? Oscar Levant was one of those personalities whose towering talent is rivaled by an equally towering eccentricity.

Extractions: Shine is Rachmaninoffs Third Piano Concerto in D minor, op. 30. Part of the films hype involved fetishizing the technical difficulty and musical challenge of this piece (witness popular press articles such as "Between the Rach III and a Hard Place: A Notoriously Brutal Concerto Stars in a New Film" ) in order for its practice and performance scenes to carry dramatic impact. "Its a piece for elephants, elephantine!" David chatters. His piano teacher warns Davids demanding father, "Whatever you do, dont you inflict bloody Rachmaninoff on him! Hes not ready!" The professor exhorts David to imagine the "monumental Rach 3" in terms of a confrontation between concerto agents: "Think of it as two separate melodies jousting for supremacy!" The concerto performance itself is presented as a dangerous interaction: "Performing is a risk, you know! No safety net!" his professor warns him. "Make no mistake, Davidits dangerous. You will get hurt!"

Extractions: His Works Radio The Kraft Music Hall In October, 1947, Al Jolson assumed the starring role on the Kraft Music Hall, a radio program he had introduced in the early 1930s. From October 2, 1947, through May 26, 1949, Al Jolson, along with pianist Oscar Levant, welcomed a variety of guests from the stage, screen, and radio to seventy-one broadcasts of the program. The usual format of the program included an introductory song by Jolson, a piano piece by Levant, a routine between the two principles, the guest star, and a closing number by Jolson. Depending on the guest star, this pattern could be altered, modified, or trashed completely. Although the original format included a female vocalist, Milenna Miller, added because the network and sponsors were afraid that Jolson could not carry the show himself, she was quietly dropped after the second show. In the review of the premier broadcast, Variety picked up on this piece of miscasting, and suggested the change in their review. Summary of Broadcasts
