Extractions: 'Unstressed elegance' By Don Freeman December 13, 2002 A beautiful quote, if you love jazz, and I do. Jazz was indeed the core essence of this brilliant hoofer and a singer who introduced many of the enduring songs of his day. The foremost songwriters from Irving Berlin to Cole Porter sought him out with their tunes, to which he added the tone of jazz and a personal style that was charming and inimitable and musically entrancing. I will go further: Fred Astaire was the greatest performer who ever faced an audience. Chaplin could always make an audience cry, but I have witnessed his old comedies and he never elicited laughter from me. Jolson was indefatigable with his explosive energy but he was locked to an era long past. Bet me that in the forthcoming decades, Astaire will never be labeled old-fashioned. Fred Astaire, as dancer and singer, will always be eternally contemporary. Once, there were the two Astaire kids from Omaha, Fred and his older sister, Adele. Their father, a brewer named Austerlitz, had migrated from Austria. In time, the name would be bobbed to fit the marquees. They were taken by their mother to New York to study the art of Terpsichore. Soon they would emerge as a team that wowed the folks out front in vaudeville and then they hit stardom on Broadway. They worked exquisitely in tandem until Adele married into British nobility and Fred went off on his own.

The Rose Museum Exhibit at Carnegie Hall: A Virtual Tour By John Ardoin T o celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gershwin's birth in September, 1998, Carnegie Hall opened a remarkable exhibition of memorabilia of the Gershwin brothers George and Ira in its Rose Museum. The show's title, "Nice Work If You Can Get It," was borrowed from one of the brothers' best-known songs, and, as the catalogue published by Carnegie Hall observes, the two men were opposites in personality, lifestyle, and creative pursuits: "George and his brother Ira represent a unique and perhaps the most successful collaboration in American music. George the composer and pianist, with his musical ability, charismatic personality, energy and ambitious drive, became internationally famous while still in his early twenties and died tragically at the age of thirty-eight.

Extractions: Oscar Levant was a well known performer who appeared in several Hollywood films of the 1940's. He is remembered as a pianist and recording artist. Among his other credits, he wrote the lyric, -Irving Caesar the music, for the song "Lady, Play Your Mandolin" recorded ca. 1931, with Al Bowlly vocal and the Roy Fox Orchestra. (An English Band). Also: Al Lewis, recalled today as a lyricist, did occasionally write the music too..He was most active during the 1920's and into the 1950's. (Often confused with Sam M. Lewis) During this time, he very often worked with fellow lyricist Al Sherman, and with composer Abner Silver. His best known hit songs include:

Extractions: Amid Hollywood's general decline, MGM produced its share of low budget quickies. However, it also managed to turn out some of the most extraordinary musicals ever filmed. Four in particular were standouts: An American in Paris Gene Kelly falls in love with shop girl Leslie Caron while pianist Oscar Levant provides sardonic commentary. Director Vincente Minnelli used Alan Jay Lerner 's screenplay to showcase classic George and Ira Gershwin songs. "By Strauss" and "I Got Rhythm" became giddy sidewalk production numbers, and a 17-minute fantasy ballet (which took more than two months to rehearse and shoot) turned the tone poem "American in Paris" into the most ambitious use of dance ever attempted in a feature film. The film received six Academy Awards including Best Picture, and a special award for Gene Kelly's contribution to dance on screen. Singin in The Rain and Stanley Donen co-directed this hilarious screenplay written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green . It told of the insanity that reigned in Hollywood when sound was introduced, making and breaking stars. Kelly

Extractions: Glazier Does Gershwin July 4th is all the excuse I need to write about American composers or performers. This month I can do both simultaneously thanks to the superb recording of unusual Gershwin repertoire by the gifted 33-year-old American pianist Richard Glazier. The compact disc is called "Gershwin: Remembrance and Discovery," and it's on the Centaur label (CRC 2271). This CD is distributed by Qualiton Imports, though in this case it is "imported" from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a place where, it seems, both modern politicians and classical Centaurs live. Of course there is no more American composer than George Gershwin. It would be hard to find a compatriot who didn't love his music. He was the first highly successful cross-over composer, writing long-form "classical" music that instantly became as popular as his most popular tunes. In my view, Gershwin was one of the greatest tunesmiths in all music history, knocking out one gorgeous, unforgettable melody after another - an American Schubert, although, unlike poor Franz, very much appreciated in his own time. As you can imagine, I have quite a collection of Gershwin CDs, so it's hard for any solo pianist to come up with repertoire that isn't already on my shelves. But Glazier has managed to do this, and do it with such feeling, I knew on first hearing that here was a performer who loved Gershwin's music at least as much as I do.

Extractions: However her character may have felt in this 1946 romantic drama, on-screen Joan Crawford played second fiddle to nobody. Although John Garfield had the larger role, as a ghetto boy who rises to fame and fortune as a classical violinist, Crawford dominated the film. From her first appearance, fending off a circle of admirers all trying to light her cigarette, to her final scenes as she walks into the ocean to save Garfield's career, the film showcased Crawford in one of her most complex roles. Humoresque was adapted from a Fannie Hurst short story that had been filmed as a silent in 1920. The 1946 version was inspired less by a desire to remake her classic tearjerker than by Warner Bros.' need to get something out of a very expensive and lengthy screenplay Clifford Odets had written for Rhapsody in Blue , their musical biography of composer George Gershwin. The Odets take on his story was good, but a little heavier on social commentary than they'd planned. But his story of a slum boy whose musical talents are exploited by the wealthy had potential, so producer Jerry Wald matched it with Hurst's similar tale to create a vehicle for John Garfield.
Humoresque pianist oscar levant is a double threat in this movie, as he, too, doesa star turn as Boray's best friend, acting as a comedic foil. http://video.reviewindex.com/reviews/6301968964.html

The main thing wrong with it is Clifford Odets ridiculously pretentious, stilted, heavy-handed, and ultimately nonsensical script. But that doesnt mean you cant watch this and enjoy it given the proper (or rather, improper, irreverent) attitude. Certain of Odets bizarre unintentional non-sequitors are hilarious. The incongruity of some of Oscar Levants comic ad-libs are a treat though just one Marx brother is not enough. Garfield never learned to fake playing the violin sufficiently; so one violinist was enlisted to finger his violin and another to bow it. At times it is clearly apparent there are three men manning one violin, and the effect is both scary and amusing. (Isaac Stern plays on the soundtrack. Oscar Levant quipped, "After we finish this movie we should go on tour the five of us.")

By Peter G. Davis Left-handed complement:Ursula Oppens, with Dennis Russell Davies at Carnegie Hall. L etting go of the 1998 George Gershwin centenary is proving to be difficult, if forgivably so. There is still plenty to learn about this most popular of serious American composers, especially the exact nature of the scores he wrote for his many Broadway shows. The American Composers Orchestra 's recent tribute, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies in Carnegie Hall, wasn't able to go into that, but the music was choice and the context fascinating. This was not just another run-through of overplayed Gershwin concert classics but an attempt to locate the composer amid the music of three contemporaries who were both associates and admirers: Oscar Levant and Vernon Duke, who, like their mentor, traveled between high- and lowbrow circles with varying degrees of discomfort, and Maurice Ravel, a fastidious classicist whose symbiotic relationship with Gershwin has yet to be properly studied. The program consisted of four works for piano and orchestra, performed in ascending order of quality: one-movement concertos by Duke and Levant, followed by Gershwin's

Extractions: The Stock Market Blues, Remembering The Great Depression October marks the 69th anniversary of the great crash of 1929 that plunged the country into a massive financial depression that eventually spread to the world and changed the financial markets forever. It is hard to believe that a condition that occured so long ago still affects our lives today. As it is, the market seems always jittery in October, whether that is due to continuing fear over seventy years or just the nature of financial cycles, who knows. Of course the great depression also affected music. The euphoric music of the late twenties turned to more somber tunes and as the depression deepened, music turned to messages of hope and future happiness to divert attention from the reality of the times. This month ParlorSongs takes a musical tour of the depressuion with depression era music. Some of the greatest music of our time emerged from this deeply emotional and trying period. Loveable and Sweet Cover artist: unknown In 1929 the roaring 20s were coming to a close, everything was wonderful, the economy was booming and the flappers were still out there flapping. I am sure that most people thought the good times would never stop. This song is a typical upbeat twenties fox-trot, full of optimism and revelry. Soon all would change.
