Extractions: For Irvine World News George Gershwin has always been popular with audiences. Perhaps because of this popularity, and also due to the fact he was a composer of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood songs, his relatively few forays into classical music have been met by many musicians with a somewhat patronizing attitude. Alain Lefevre is not one of them. "His Concerto in F is one of my favorite piano concertos," said the French-Canadian pianist, who will perform the 1925 work with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra on Saturday at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Note Lefevre calling Gershwin's Concerto one of his favorites. Not one of his favorite American piano concertos, but all piano concertos.
Extractions: For Irvine World News A vibrant rendition of Mozart's Concerto in E-flat Major for Two Pianos and Orchestra, balanced out a somewhat pedestrian reading of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, at the latest concert by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater Saturday evening. Duo-pianists Arianna Goldina and Remy Loumbrozo made their second joint appearance in 11 years with the orchestra and conductor Carl St. Clair. Back then, they also played the Mozart Two-Piano Concerto, but it was at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, when St. Clair was just beginning his tenure as the orchestra's second music director. Now, 11 years and a move to the outdoors later, Goldina, Loumbrozo, St. Clair and a reduced Pacific Symphony collaborated for an exquisite interpretation that left listeners wanting more - or at least an encore - from the husband-and-wife team. The pianists sparkled in their shimmering playing, the one weaving in and out of the other and vice versa, so that the two parts were truly unified and equal.

Extractions: By Stephen Pedersen / Arts Reporter REVIEW CORNER Alain Lefevre: Liszt Transcriptions of Bach and Wagner ANALEKTA Fleurs de lys - FL 2 3179 Live music is best. Which is a strange way to begin a record review. But before the phonograph came along, almost every town had its band and every city its orchestra and opera company. Musicians of all kinds played in cafes, and jazz itself was born somewhere between the church and the whore house. During Wagner's day (1813-1882), if you wanted to listen to Beethoven symphonies or Wagner operas at home, you relied on piano transcriptions for the bigger works, though opera themes and symphony melodies were arranged for instrumental duets (including piano) as well. No middle-class home lacked a piano. No gentlewoman could be considered well-brought up who did not play it. Gentlemen often sang. In that way, live music prevailed. But it took a piano virtuoso to play the technically difficult operatic and symphonic transcriptions. Wagner's contemporary, and father-in-law, Franz Liszt (1811-1886) dined out in the best homes by way of his spectacular playing and his ability to recreate masterpieces as well as compose them. Canadian pianist Alain Lefevre revives this period for us in his recording of Liszt transcriptions. The first two tracks, the Prelude and Fugue in A Minor, BWV 543, may surprise those who know Liszt pretty well, in their musical restraint.

Crammed with lines and peopled by three ghost characters in a state of suspended animation, this play of the mind makes huge demands of the actors and the audience.

Extractions: Directory of Associate Composers A B C D ... Z Bio Selected Works Bio Alain Payette Composer ALAIN PAYETTE was born in Montreal in 1953. His background as a musician bears a distinctly personal stamp. After only a few years of formal study, Payette chose to pursue his development on his own, without a teacher. With his instincts guiding him in the process of composition, he has persevered in acquiring a musical vocabulary suited to his own expressive needs. He believes that feelings must play in integral part in music, and melody holds a place of honour in all his works, for in his view, it is one of the best means to reach the listener. The result is music of great candour, accessible and affecting - music that reflects the character of the man who created it, a composer who has devoted his life wholly to his art. Payette is a prolific composer, with more than fifty works to his credit. His chamber music has been heard frequently in concert and on the radio, and his symphonic compositions performed by orchestras in Canada. Always greeted warmly by the public, Payette's music is thought of as bewitching musical poetry and praised for its lyrical beauty. Performing organizations are becoming increasingly interested in his works and including them in their programmes. The first recording of a workd by Alain Payette for Koch International Classics was "L'ivresse d'aimer," a setting for baritone of five poems by Gustave Labbé. These songs were premiered by the renowned Gino Quilico, to whom they are dedicated, and Alain levèvre. An American critic wrote "Check out Payette - for whom this album is enthusiastically recommended." (Adrian Corleonis

Reach the world Alain Lefevre: The man, his music and his vision Ankara - Turkish Daily News Even though the Ankara exhibition season has come to an end until September, it is still possible to visit certain exhibitions that have opened their doors despite the lack of visitors. The fact that the cultural season comes to and end in June and doesn't start up again until October is one of the most disheartening things about Ankara. Unlike Ankara, Istanbul doesn't have a "culture season" everyday one can find a concert, exhibition or a fashion show. Istanbul is alive with culture. I feel that as the capital city of Turkey, Ankara has to keep up with the rest of Turkey and the rest of the world and put an end to this seasonal culture absurdity.
Extractions: Place your ads in the turkish daily news online.... Reach the world Istanbul- Our metropolis has no shortage of galleries many of them are huge, anonymous spaces owned by banks, and though the shows may be excellent there is nothing memorable about their setting. Thus I was struck with awe when I finally found the "Ayse ve Ercumend Kalmik Vakfi" in a backstreet in the Gumussuyu area of Taksim and I had to ask about five people where Sarayarkasi Sokak was. It is a stupendous feat of contemporary architecture inside an Ottoman pasha's villa, blending the best of antique and modern into a sparse, perfect neo-Japanese environment. Indeed, the performance by Gunseli Kato which had originally brought me there was also Japanese-inspired, taking place in a glassed-in courtyard lit with candles. It was truly exquisite, with the sound of water running from an old Ottoman marble fountain contributing a sense of Buddhist meditation. If I could pick a place to live, this would be it. I instantly wanted to marry the architect, but unsurprisingly it turned out to be a woman, and here I think I'll let her speak for herself about what she's achieved.
