Extractions: Chopin Year - 1999 Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Kidderminster The great Polish composer and pianist Fryderyk Chopin was born at Zelazowa Wola near Warsaw, in 1810. He began to study the piano at the age of four and played at a private concert in Warsaw just four years later. In 1826 he entered the Warsaw Conservatory to study harmony and counterpoint. During the previous ten years he had already written a number of pieces for piano. Despite early concert success in Vienna in 1829 a longer stay in the city did not result in the recognition for which he yearned. In 1831 he moved to Paris where he spent most of the rest of his live winning acclaim as a teacher and composer and as a performer at intimate social gatherings where his improvisation dazzled his audiences. His famous liaison with the French writer George Sand began in 1837. They spent the winter of 1838 in Mallorca where the poor weather did little to help his battle against the onset of tuberculosis. Their relationship collapsed in bitterness and acrimony in 1847. The following year Chopins health deteriorated further during a concert tour of England and Scotland and he died in Paris on October 17th 1849. As a composer Chopins achievements were remarkable and his influence profound.

Extractions: This collection juxtaposes a major work from Baratis maturity, the First Symphony of 1963, with two companion pieces from his later years. In all these works the composers dominant musical characteristics may be heard; a vigorous working out of motivic material, rhythmic energy, and a mastery of orchestral texture. The First Symphony was written in 1963 during a stay in Switzerland. Set in three movements, it is packed with musical incident. The Chant of Darkness was composed in 1993 as an expression of the composers grief as his daughter lay dying from cancer. The work exhibits a frightening sense of finality. The Chant of Light dates from 1994-5 and is cast in a simple structure, displaying Baratis love of working with small motivic cells, combined with the use of luscious orchestral color.
