The consortium consists of twenty-seven orchestras and music organizations from across the United States, ranging from the largest American orchestras to university ensembles. (See list of participating orchestras on page 4). The CSO has the honor of presenting the world premiere of the work, followed by the remaining groups. When Ms. Zwilich received this remarkable commission for a work on a millennial theme, she looked to her own past for inspiration. As she explains:

Extractions: The band formed in Atlanta in 1984 by Tommy Dean and Bruce Hampton cohort, Billy McPhersen Tommy Dean Mike Ewbank Earl Ford Randy Hunter has played saxophone with Cab Calloway, Duffie Jackson Band (of Count Basie's Band), Bob Crosby and the Bobcats, the Larry Elkhart "Hooked on Swing" Orchestra, and the Modernaires of the Glen Miller Orchestra (on the Mississippi Queen). He studied music at Valdosta State College. He and Ted are constantly creating "head charts" for on the fly arrangements of tunes from the immense League library. Ted and Randy have known each other since they were childhood friends. As father of five, Randy looks forward to getting out on the road with a bunch of other large, sweaty men to travel hundreds of miles in some over-sized motor vehicle and play another gig. Ted Dortch Jean-Marc Porson , from the D.C. area, has worked in Los Angeles, California, the D.C. area and the Southeast. He has played bass with Bill Sheffield, Lotsa Poppa, Sandra Hall, Francine Reed, St. Clair Pinckney, Red Dog, David Ragsdale (of Kansas), and Tinsley Ellis before landing with the League. John's voice adds an exciting texture to the band. John is the only son of parents who worked in the U.S. diplomatic corps. This has made him a most civil and polite individual. Underneath his charming exterior lurks the surly, willful delinquent who spent a number of years in reform school. Don't be fooled.

Extractions: My guide to the recordings of Bix Beiderbecke and Jelly Roll Morton in my teens was Mikael Ankers . We met in high scool and spent endless sessions listening to his 78's collection which seemed to increase every day. He played the piano (among other instruments) and was also a good arranger and managed to come to work for record collector Ray Avery one summer in California in the 60's, where he met some of his idols from the Bob Crosby's Orchestra, i.e. Matty Matlock and Eddie Miller. In 1968 Stockholm Stompers , was started in with Ulf Dreber, who played the clarinet in a way reminding of Edmond Hall. We recorded on Kenneth Records and one of the tunes - "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me" included a bopchorus I had composed. After this heretical attempt into modern music I decided to concentrate on

Members for the mixed chorus still are being recruited. The show, set for May 16 and 17, is untitled. "It's centered around food," said Wayne Owens, the chorus' self-proclaimed "enabler." The newly formed Village Singers gather for an impromptu practice session Friday at the Columbus Maennerchor. Wayne Owens (seated at the piano) launched the group, which will present a spring show May 16 and 17. Also pictured (standing, left to right) are Jessica Bernert, Rodger Suver, Tom Larsen and Eddie Orendorff. Dan Trittschuh "Our director wants to sing about food. He thinks the German Village area is a good food and drink area. Seems every time we get together, we eat and drink. And so we are going to sing about it," said Owens. Tentative musical selections include Food Glorious Food and I Like Beer. The group's director, John Carter, is a renowned composer and publisher of Christian music. Like everyone else involved, he's volunteering his services. Pianist Janet O'Brien provides accompaniment.

Extractions: Station Information ... Highlights for On This Date... As radio continued to shine with the glow of its Golden Age, in the late 1930s, Indiana University significantly broadened the number of opportunities for students in radio production. While the ability to expose students to genuine hands-on experience in radio could not be realized without a station broadcasting from the IU campus, in the years preceding WFIU's first broadcast in 1950, students and faculty produced numerous radio programs for national and international distribution. These projects and activities prepared a fertile ground for the station's eventual fruition and cultivation. In this edition of Directions in Sound, Catherine Smith offers some remembrances of radio at IU in the 1940s [see facing page]. Many productions were created by faculty and students during this period on campus. In addition to the discussion-oriented, theater, and music programs referenced by Smith, from 1937 through the fifties, students produced the Indiana School of the Sky, a weekday, fifteen-minute educational supplement for elementary and high school classrooms, carried by stations throughout the state. IU radio productions were even heard overseas; short-wave foreign language programs written and produced by foreign students, faculty members, and visitors were broadcast to Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
