Extractions: Lynn's Vinyl LP Collection Go to Site Map I have been collecting recordings since I was a kid. I have probably lost, had stolen (really!), given away, or loaned and never got back at least half as many as are listed below. This list does not include at least 200 more my wife has stashed away in a closet somewhere, mostly pop things, including over 50 Elvis Presley records. This is not a scholarly listing. No details of interest to audiophiles are included. In some cases individual works are not even listed. Anyone really interested in details on any item listed can write me at lynn.newton@cox.net Some have written asking whether any of my recordings are for sale. The answer is no. Others have written asking whether I will burn CD copies of recordings for them. The answer is no! Album data is organized by stanzas as follows: The number the left margin is the number of disks in the album set The upper case label right of the number is the sort key. Albums are listed in the order I store them, and some are not by any code obvious to anyone but me.

Jazz CDs For July-Aug. not the first meeting of the pianist and vibist larsen has been musical director ofmusical shows based with tunes by Ellington, Benny carter, Billy Strayhorn http://www.audaud.com/audaud/JULY-AUG/jazzJUL.html
Extractions: by John Henry This new offering from the enterprising digital label stands above the welter of tango-oriented CDs coming out now both for its unusual 20-piece jazz-flavored band arrangements and its crystalline sonics. The latter are due to this being a live-to-two-track DSD recording down-converted by a special process which DMP's Tom Jung feels retains much of the terrific quality of the original DSD masters. Only two of the nine tangos here are from the pen of Astor Piazzolla, but all are - as with his music - infused with a jazz feeling. There is a single bandoneon in the ensemble but the brass and reed sections bring a big band sound to the tango which is uniquely unlike anything Piazzolla did. 70s JAZZ PIONEERS, Live at Town Hall NYC - The Music if Herbie Hancock, Stanley Turrentine, Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis - 1201 Music 6010-2: Now that many younger people have tired of today's rock and pop and turned to jazz some of the great jazzmen of two and three decades ago are being rediscovered. That's what this live concert was all about. For those of us whose involvement in jazz didn't just begin yesterday, we've been listening to these players all along! On this six-track session they include reed man Randy Brecker, one of the leading female jazz pianists - Joanne Brackeen, Dave Liebman, Al Foster and the terrific guitarist Pat Martino. Two longish tracks give most of the crew a chance for some great solos:

Extractions: Mischa Spel - Het Parool (Amsterdam) (Festival Musica Sacra) Vingt Regards in a marathon session from eleven to one thirty at night he played out these emotions in all their gradations, he established musical connections and brought unity into Messiaen's vivid style. For the chosen ones present, this performance probably came closest to the sacred experience aimed at in this Maastricht festival. Paul Luttikhuis - NRC Handelsblad (Amsterdam) Already the colour of chopinesque melancholy in the beautiful opening movement, followed by ravelian refinement in the second, signalled something unusual, in a business where the specialists of each composer easily lose their grip on the personal recreation and end up resembling each other completely. The appearance of the frail, birdlike figure was a fairy tale in itself, as it gathered all its energy into producing sounds you would hardly consider possible on a concert grand. Thus he didn't just play up to the extasy of the work, a term worn out by its overuse referring to Messiaens cascades of notes. He also managed to get these back to the finest nuances of the music and sing them with restrained force, intensely beautiful and stretched into infinity.

Extractions: David Del Tredici's "Gay Life: A Cycle of Six Songs for Amplified Baritone Solo and Orchestra," which was commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, gets its world premiere Thursday through Saturday at Davies Symphony Hall, with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting and baritone William Sharp the vocal soloist. The six songs of ``Gay Life'' chronicle the joys and sorrows of contemporary life from the point of view of a gay man. The composer incorporated the texts of such poets as Allen Ginsberg, Paul Monette and Thom Gunn in his multifaceted work. ``It's a big piece, 45 minutes, and all the songs are connected,'' del Tredici, told the San Jose Mercury-News . ``It celebrates gay life, beginning in a happier mode and going through the various stages of being a gay man finding a partner, losing a partner to AIDS, then, at the end, a meditation remembering what is wonderful and finding a kind of peace.'' Del Tredici, who now lives in New York, was born and raised in California and graduated from the University of California-Berkeley in 1959. He began his musical career in 1955, when he appeared as an 18-year-old piano soloist with the S.F. Symphony, performing Saint-Saens' Piano Concerto in G minor
