Enya A Day Without Rain Akin to a glass of Grand Mariner. Full, sweet, and immensely satisfying; leaving the warm afterglow to savor. Boxy speakers ruin the experience; whered the ambiance go? Dont even try it with minimonitors , the soundstage may be there, but the rest of the music lacks the ethereal elements. The recording itself isnt the five stars it could be, but it is still horribly difficult to playback; requires excellence all the way around. Fun to listen to on any system, you can hear what it should sound like it in your head; almost invoking an imaginary world trying to force yourself to hear the magic thats missing. Once you hear it right, youll never hear it the same again. Randy Travis, Down at the Old Corral (Wind in the Wire, 9 45319-2) Country music? How can he make his voice do this; the lower midbass of his voice is nothing less than jaw-dropping; separates the men from the boys.

On these civic, humanistic and democratic principles Czech Music Council restaured its activity in February 1993 (the Council was founded in 1972 and its situation was therefore limited by the contemporary political system). The Concil revival was not initiated only due to internal needs to study the situation of Czech music culture in the period of the political and economical transformation but also due to the European Music Council which in this period started a trend of the European music live integration. The Czech Music Council associates 40 important music institutions, individual members (including the Council presidium) and honorary members. The Czech Music Council follows the tradition of the Council International of Music and since 1994 has been annually awarding exceptional activities across all genres and styles of Czech music culture. Bio Of Walter Buczynski PolishCanadian composer Walter Buczynski's Third Piano Sonata was commissionedby pianist antonin kubalek, and was completed in 1990. http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cyoungk/buczynskibio.htm
Extractions: review of some of his music from Free Reed Review "The Canadian composer Walter Buczynski composed Fantasy on Themes of the Past in five movements: 1) Old Polish Folk Airs, 2) Tango, 3) Fast Fingers, 4) Waltz and 5) Square Steady Beat. Due to my Polish heritage I recognized some of the tunes in the first movement, although I must admit that Buczynski (Polish also, I presume) surprised me with his humorous treatment; parts of the piece are really funny. The third movement utilizes some great jazz riffs and progressions and the waltz contains some quotes from popular Strauss waltzes. Buczynski very cleverly utilizes the free-bass left-hand manual for the serious sections, and utilizes the stradella left-hand manual for the more humorous sections (more fuel for my theory that the stradella accordion is often used by composers as a joki ng comedian). The final movement, Square Steady Beat, caught my ear immediately with its dynamic all-pervasive low string-bass ostinato on the down beat contrasted with the high violin pizzicato ostinato on the upbeats, not unlike a contemporary rock bas s and drum beat. The contrapuntal boogie woogie sections are great!" Polish-Canadian composer Walter Buczynski's Third Piano Sonata was

Agnuuuusss Dei. . . Dooo-na Nooo-bis Paaaacem. . '' Words from the ``Agnus'' scudded along Tomas Luis de Victoria's music, written four centuries ago for an ensemble of seven pristine male singers. Back then, monks probably sang it. But at 6:15 on a Thursday night, 1999, the voices belonged to the Concord Ensemble, a luminous a cappella sextet (plus an extra countertenor, for the occasion) from Bloomington, IN., who were gathered in Troy Savings Bank Music Hall to record their debut compact disc with Dorian Recordings. They had just sung one portion of the Mass. Now, huddled around two five-foot speakers in a spartan recording booth along with Tina Chancey, their bristly, go-to producer, and Craig Dory, Dorian's president, co-founder and droll engineering guru they listened. And listened. And listened some more. ``Too sharp?''

Extractions: by Allan Pulker Tafelmusik Now approaching the end of its 23rd season, Tafelmusik is one of Toronto's musical success stories. One reason is that artistic director, Jeanne Lamon, has never taken success for granted or been content to rest on her many laurels. In explaining how she develops the plan for a concert season she said that a major consideration was "to show Toronto what is out there". One way she does this is by bringing to the Tafelmusik stage authorities on period performance practice, such as Andrew Parrott, "one of the most intelligent and probing musicians I've ever worked with." Another is by keeping abreast of the latest musicological research and incorporating it into her programming. In the last six years, for example, knowledge of Joseph Boulogne, Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, has surfaced. Tafelmusik will feature his music, notable for its wealth of melodic invention, April 10 to 14. Fred Gaviller Another remarkable man, the late Fred Gaviller, was such a committed supporter of music and musicians that when he died a group of his friends established a fund in his name "to help establish or further careers of talented performers in the form of professionally presented recitals." The Fund is presenting pianist, Antonin Kubalek, in recital on April 27 at the Glenn Gould Studio , to raise money for this very worthy cause. Mr. Kubalek will be playing the same program at this concert that he will play in May at the Prague Spring International Music Festival.
