Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Sergei Rachmaninov Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin , and Robert Schumann were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including

Extractions: You're at Ethan's Home Page Updated: 24 June 2002 03:09AM GMT+8 There can be few pianists who are on par with Stephen Kovacevich. His mastery of piano, his superb, profound, often radical, approach to music, especially to those of Beethoven, has made him one of the most respected pianist this world has ever had. Born in 1940, in Los Angeles, Kovacevich has studied with Lev Shorr. He made his début in San Francisco in 1951. During his younger years, Kovacevich had enjoyed playing his favourite composers' works - Chopin and Liszt. He went to London in 1959 to study with Dame Myra Hess, as a scholarship student. It is through Dame Myra Hess that Kovacevich fell in love with Beethoven. Even though many years has passed, Kovacevich still pays his tribute to Dame Myra Hess, for she has greatly influence his playing and musicianship. Kovacevich made his London début in Wigmore Hall in 1961. He has since travelled around the world, giving solo recitals and appearing as soloist in concertos. Kovacevich is also active in recording industry. He is currently working on a project to record all Beethoven's piano sonatas, under contract with EMI. Extractions: Philips 456877-2 ADD 2CDs: 75:00, 77:10 Philips Classics recently released the first volumes in its Great Pianists of the 20 th Century Julius Katchen's career ended prematurely when cancer claimed him at age 42. In the brief time that was available to him, he become known as a superior interpreter of Brahms's piano music. (The complete solo piano works can be heard on London/Decca 455 247-2.) Interestingly, he was the first pianist to be heard on a solo LP (the Brahms Sonata for Piano included here), and also the first to be heard on a concerto LP (Rachmaninoff's Second, with conductor Anatole Fistoulari.) Katchen's first teachers were his musically gifted grandparents, and he also studied with David Saperton. He was playing concertos with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic before he was a teenager. An intellectual young man, Katchen received degrees in English literature and philosophy from Haverford College before he was twenty. As with Stephen Kovacevich (below), Europe, rather than his native America, was his center of professional activity.

Extractions: EMI Classics CDC 56761 DDD 71:56 When Stephen Kovacevich made recordings for Philips Classics, he fell short of completing a Beethoven sonata cycle; here's hoping that EMI Classics gets it all on disc this time around. For me, Kovacevich is something of a surprise. I knew that he was a well-regarded pianist, but he has not enjoyed the press coverage or the popularity of contemporaries such as Murray Perahia. It is only in the past year that I have made an effort to acquaint myself with his recordings, and I have yet to be disappointed. A Beethoven specialist, he nevertheless excels in much of the repertoire. These recordings were made in 1998 in London's Air Studios, using the "Royal Festival Hall's Steinway piano, supplied courtesy of the South Bank Center." The sound could scarcely be better. It is warm and defined, and its brilliance never turns hard. (Apparently some of the earlier issues in this series were not so lucky.) The pianist seems to be in the same room as the listener, but the effect is not oppressive, and it is very easy to become involved with the music simply as a sound experience. At the century's end, Kovacevich seems quietly destined to be one of the 21
